Why is this?

13" mbp looks perfect, but 15" uMBP looks a little too big (especially in comparison with my early 2008 15")
 
What do you mean, the footprint?

The area it takes up on sitting on a desk. i.e., the width X depth.

For the original MBP it was 14.1" X 9.6" = ~135 square inches
For the current unibody it is 14.35" X 9.82" = ~141 square inches

The height is shorter, though (.95" vs. 1") and the total rectangular volume (W X D X H) is less (134 cubic inches vs. 135).
 
It is slightly bigger. But maybe it's because the design is cleaner which makes the notebook look like it has a lot of free space. Also, the-edge to-edge screen makes the laptop look bigger.
