bump... any advice based on my situation? Thanks.

My $.02: If you like the portability of your lightweight computer, I'd think pretty hard about jumping to the 17". You can always add a monitor later if the 12" or 15" don't offer enough video real estate.

For me, I was in the same boat just over a year ago. Based on endlessly reading these forums I'd decided I wanted the 17". Thankfully, I stopped by an Apple store and used it for a while, because I realized the 15" was more than big enough for me.

It's been said many times in this post already, but it seems worth repeating: Go try out all the configurations you're interested in. Other folks opinions are just that: opinions. They can be useful, but they don't compare to personal experience.

Sounds like you had a 17" PB for a short while before the problems hit? If that's true and you have access to your coworker's 15" PB, you're probably in the best position to decide between the two.

As for ibook + imac vs. PB, that sounds like a whole separate issue...

Hey thanks! I actually never did get the 17" PB - almost a reality, even had the order underway, but it was cut short. I did go to an Apple Store in the US and tried the three PBs out endlessly, but I just couldn't tell at the time, so I figured last year the 17" was the best bet. The Windows 15" I ended up buying was just too bulkly, even heavier than the 17" PB, so it wasn't a great comparison.

I know that each person can only give their opinion, but that's what I want because usually the person's experiences are explained as well, and I'm better able to see whose situation mine is similar to and what I could likely expect.

Thanks again!

It's your decision, but I would go for the 15" for a variety of reasons:
Who knows what will happen....I hope they get rid of the 12" PowerBook and replace it with a 13.3" inch widescreen :D

Oh god i just ordered my 12" powerbook today, dont say 13.3 yet. This is the first rumor i heard of this yet. I will cry if it comes out and i missed out

My observation...

is that at first, the 17" is going to look really ackward (but beautiful), and you migt be wondering "when am I EVER going to need/use that much screen space????"

Well, I started from a Dell Inspiron 15" widescreen, and now in a 17" PowerBook, I can't imagine using a smaller screen to work with. Trust me, once you've spent some good quality time with the 17", you won't want to go back to a smaller one. :p

During summer, I had to temp. use a Sony Vaio that (I think) had a 14" screen. It seemed to small... and then when I came back home to my baby Apple (sorry, not baby-sized), I felt so releived.

I was in the same boat as all of you guys, and I haven't regret my purchase at all since. I'm a very pleased owner. :)

I'm desparately trying to be level headed and rational and say the 12" PB + monitor is all I need, but I think, deep down, way down, inside my soul, I'm just greedy and vain and want the 17" PB to make a statement. Am I bad? Well, I suppose I really should think this through...

... you know what I'd really want? A 10.4" or 12.1" widescreen small-sized PB, sort of like the new small Dells, or the Toshiba Libretto. Something in that form factor. This would be REALLY portable for those times I need it.

... maybe I'll just sit on this fence for a little while longer...
