I'm currently using a nTb 2016 13" (2Ghz i5 16gb, 512), and have concluded that I need to upgrade to something more capable. I'd decided on going with a 2019 2.4 16gb 512 13", and had actually ordered one from Adorama a week ago Friday. I do enjoy the compact size of the 13", but wasn't all that thrilled with losing my ESC key (and to a lesser extent the remaining function keys) with the touch bar on all 2019's. I'm a software developer and make extensive use of that escape key.

Enter the "surprise" announcement of the 16" mbp with the physical function key, with a price pretty comparable to what I paid for the 13" for the same memory specs. So now I'm at a loss what to get. As a software developer, I really appreciate screen resolution/real estate and brute power, but I also travel a fair amount and have to pack my computer around when I do, and as such have a not insignificant investment in folios and backpacks targeted to the 13". The 16" has upsides as far as power, keyboard, Escape key!, battery and screen size/resolution are concerned. The 13 has portability as its primary benefit, plus I don't have to re-invest in new travel gear.

So, what I'm asking for is opinions -- Go with the new 2019 13" I already have in my possession (unopened) or instead go with the 16" and that massive screen?? Or should I hobble along on my current 13" and wait for the updated 13/14 that will likely come out at some point in mid/late 2020? My current 13" isn't on deaths door -- I'd just like to move on while this machine still has good resale value thanks to its 5 remaining months of Applecare and 3 month old keyboard, battery, motherboard, memory and SSD. (Thank you very much swelling battery recall!)

Penny for your thoughts!

I moved from the 2016 13" MBP with touchbar to the 2019 16" MBP. The size difference is very noticeable. If you value the 13" size, you might have trouble with it. Have you seen the 16" in person? I feel like you'll know. I only just got it setup tonight, so I'm still adjusting to the size. My laptop bag can carry it, but I did switch from 15" -> 13" before and part of the reasoning was weight/size. We'll see how I feel after a few weeks of carrying this one around.

I think the wait until 2020 version of the 13" might be the best option if you really care about size.

Exactly. I’m a big fan of buying a new Apple computer the moment they update it which is why I finally ordered a 16” MBP after 6 years. If you care about size and can wait I would see if Apple comes out with a 14” next year.

id say buy it, I am a fan of buying apple products as soon as they come out, have never had an issue... and just got the 16" - coming from 13" before and love the size! sure not as transportable but jeez its so beautiful, powerful and works! You won't regret it! its the new generation...........

I'm holding off until revised non-butterfly 13" machines are available (and durability reports of more than a few days are out for the 16") - or until my 2015 13" machine actually dies and i buy something else.
