Hi all, I just purchased a quad core i5 iMac. My knowledge of computers is limited and I mainly use it to play games, surf the net and edit photos. I was wondering if it would be worth buying extra RAM to max it out to 16Gb. Would it make games runs smoother faster etc?

    Good lord no.

Besides, you can upgrade it yourself with ease, and it would likely be cheaper.

    Just go with 4-8 GB.

Sorry I should have made myself more clear. I already have the imac and was intending to buy the extra RAM and install it myself but will it make any improvement in the things I do with my computer?

How much do you currently have?

If you're already at 4GB, you'll probably notice no difference.

Let activity monitor be the judge on whether you should upgrade to more ram or not. After 1-2 days of use, look at your page ins and outs spread under activity monitor. If page outs are 10-20% or more of page ins, you'd probably benefit with more ram. If you play the games under windows, then use winodws' task manager.

    Best advice.

If the original poster thinks that he really wants 4x4 GB of RAM, he should make sure he assimilates the information about the spontaneous shutdown issues when using other than Samsung and Hynix/Apple.

Thanks for the advice guys I'll have a look at the activity monitor and see whats happeneing. I run my games natively so I'm assuming more RAM won't make something like X plane run smoother.
