Waiting for my Crucial 8gb (2x4gb) to arrive this week. Will add this to my factory installed 8gb (2x4gb) for a total of 16. May be a bit overkill for me, but for $40, couldn't resist! :D

Quick question:
Adding Crucial brand RAM with my existing apple factory RAM (2011 iMac 3.4, i7) shouldn't cause any problems right?? I've read somewhere that this may cause issues??? Do I need to use one brand (Crucial 4x4gb, removing apple installed RAM) for best performance??

5 months ago I've bought my 27 imac and stayed with 4Gb stock option. That was "silent horror" when working with Adobe CS5.5.

When I installed 16Gb, work goes smoother, much smoother.

I ordered my 16GB from OWC yesterday for my 3.4GHz 27" i7, I have 12GB on my Mac Pro which is great, but been operating on the iMac with 4GB for a few months. I've been running into issues sometimes like lags in Safari when scrolling and loading Flash, etc, hopefully the extra RAM will help fix some of these issues. I do have about 150 apps on there too (not plan to run them at the same time, LOL). The 32GB upgrade seemed unnecessary for my needs as well as too pricey (nearly $500), so the $91.99 I paid for the 16GB seems just right, this will be more than enough RAM to take care of anything I can throw at it.

For the price of it nowadays, it's easily the most cost effective upgrade you can do :)

I found a good deal on 16Gb this past weekend

I'm picking up my new 2011 base 27" iMac tomorrow and should have my 16Gb of RAM arrive tomorrow as well. I managed to get a great deal on the RAM, Newegg's President's Day sale got me 16Gb (4x4Gb G Skill RAM) for $64 (Though the normal price for that is still $80). $100 is too much to pay for 16Gb IMHO. I'm hoping 16Gb will make a big difference from 4Gb (Though the the iMac's performance should be significantly faster than my trusty Santa Rosa Macbook Pro 15" from '07 anyway).

Ordered ram this morning from OWC. My iMac came with 4GB ans I bought another 4GB (2X2GB) for $27 with shipping. Hell of a deal can't wait, will be here Saturday.

We have ordered some memory from two different sources.

16GB ( 4 X 4GB ) from Amazon ( Corsair Branded ) $84

Removed the Apple 4X2GB and installed the 16GB.

Started up fine and ran the downloaded Geekbench Utility ( free version )

The increase in Geekbench was as follows.....

8GB 116xx
16GB 118xx

xx = last two digits because they changed from one test run to the next.

We are awaiting delivery for 32 GB from OWC for another 27" iMac.

At this point we are testing for Page Outs/Swapping under some heavy photo editing work.

I paid a few dollars extra for the OEM Samsung chips. Probably made in the same factory as the no names, but gave me piece of mind none the less. Worth $100 to me. The funny thing was when searching for ram posts, I came across a few from several years ago lamenting the $5-900 you would have to pay to do a similar upgrade.

Things are moving fast.

Hi all,

I'll be looking at getting a new iMac when Apple do the next refresh, will be spending quite a bit on getting a 27' with the juiciest CPU and SSD, so no point doing this only to bottle-neck performance with a lowly 4GB ram.

I'll be looking to upgrade to 16gb as per all the comments in this thread, can you tell me if there is there a certain type of ram I should be looking at and what is the ball-park figure for 16gb?

I'm in the UK so prices will vary here, but appreciate the help :)

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying that little bit extra for Apple products, but the markup they charge for RAM upgrades is a JOKE.

£480 to go from 4GB to 16GB, when you can do the same upgrade for about £70.

Unbelievable.

When the new iMacs come out (i'm waiting for them too), just go to Crucial.com (select the UK store) and choose your iMac from the drop down lists. It'll tell you what memory to use.

Thanks for the advice!

I'm stuck with 6GB of ram on my Mac Pro 3,1 (the heat sink module one which is mega expensive even now to add more). I am feeling the sluggishness of it big time lately. I am seriously considering the next revision of the 27" iMac and maxing it out completely 32gb of ram if possible

Today, I upgrade my iMac from factory Apple 2x2 with factory Apple 2x2 + non-apple 2x4s. Thus, my iMac now has a total of 12 GBs. When it needs more memory (in 3+ years), I'll replace the factory Apple 2x2s with non-apple 2x4s replacements. Currently, my "typical home user" iMac would have worked great total 8 GBs. I'm sure it will work better with its now total of 12 GBs (for now). And yes, easy install. Simply pressed the 2x4s into the empty slots...

I had 4 pny 4gb sticks that i order from amazon and it would only recognize 12gb. Would not even start up on 16g . I order a kinston 4 gb and it works perfect. should be a problem mix and matching. This things is so smooth.

I cant wait til I upgrade the processor to the i7 eventually... and probably the graphics card down the road

Thinking of getting the 2X8 Kit from crucial should I get the 1.35v sticks or the 1.5v which would run best?

My iMac is a 2010 27" i7
