Have had kernel panics before, but today it wouldn’t wake up at all. I could get it to come back via an SMC reset, but the minute i plugged a peripheral in, it crashed. Tried again with reset, restarted, but nothing. Now, the SMC doesn’t even seem to work.

I’ve also tried the NVRAM reset (with Apple Support) and no luck. I suspect this is all tied to the use of an external monitor, but that’s just a guess. I have tried am the reset with everything unplugged as well as with power connected, but no luck.

I can’t even get to where I see an Apple logo anymore.

thanks for any help.

So after waiting about 30 minutes, it started up. What I’d like to do now is run whatever diagnostics might be helpful to prevent it from happening.

I’ll take all ideas on that, too. This is all the crash log showed:

In case anyone comes across this, Apple replaced the logic board and so far the issues I’ve had have not reappeared.

This includes kernel panics on wake from sleep and issues with external monitors.

Howdy jam919,

How long have you had the MBP? Did you use it primarily connected to an external display? I wonder if your system fried due to heat, and the new logicboard (of course) fixed it. From what I understand when using an external display, the 16" MBP gets excessively hot.

I’ve had it for about 4 months. It was a problem right out of the box. It hadn’t gotten a lot of use, either. It could have gotten warm, but I don’t remember it getting super hot. I guess I’ll see.

It also was on a stand that gave it lots of airflow all around it.

If you have File Vault 2 turned on there is an issue with this computer that I encountered.

If the screen on the MacBook Pro has been turned to the lowest brightness while connected to an external display and then you restart the computer the screen remains off and you cannot use the touch bar to increase the screen brightness because the security on the Mac stops certain USB devices from functioning until you've logged in. Similarly the Thunderbolt port wont work until you've logged in so you can't use the external display.

This for me created a scenario where I thought my Mac wasn't working and yet it was powered on I just couldn't see anything on the display. Shining a bright torch on the display allowed me to see the login window and then I could login and change brightness.

This happened to me several times before I deactivated File Vault 2. Too much of an annoyance. I'm not saying this is what was happening to you but it came to mind if you thought the machine wouldn't start up etc

Bizarre to me some of Apples decisions around this machine the way it acts when all the security is turned on really leaves me scratching my head.
