Whenever my display goes to sleep I'm having to turn it off or unplug and plug back in for it to recognize the correct resolution when I turn it on again. The test becomes blurry and the resolution doesn't look as crisps. Im having to this all the time now. I am using the LG 5k2k (LG 34BK95U-W) plugged into a CalDigit TS3 Plus(with newest firmware using USB-C 40gb rated cables.

Did you start noticing it after installing 10.15.4? People are experiencing issues with external displays now, including me. I don't have the blur problem though.

Blurry suggests that the Mac isn't recognising the ideal resolution of the display or the preferences are defaulting to something other than optimal. Perhaps check the Display Preferences?

It has become more of an issue since 10.15.4, its almost everyday that I have to unplug/turn off my display for the mac to recognize the actual resolutions. Before 10.15.4 it was maybe ones every couple of days.

That's the first thing I check when I experience the issue. I attached a couple of pics, the first is when it's working just fine and the second is when it has issues.

Is that correctly identifying the monitor? LG HDR 5k seems incorrect - can you try holding down option while in the Displays preferences to get the Detect Displays button to appear.

You could also hold down Option when clicking on the Scaled button in the resolution section to present more options.

I think I read something somewhere that Catalina on MacBook Pros changes the default resolution to a scaled one for more desktop real estate rather than going for true retina for clarity. The right hand panel is not showing the maximum resolution possible which is a concern.

By the way, holding down option is distinctly un-Maclike but I guess they are hiding these 'options' from non-pro users (shrug).

This happens to me sometimes as well, not as often as you describe, but it does happen. I usually have to unplug and replug the monitor to get it back to normal. Same scenario, wake up from sleep or something like that, display preferences no long show the "scaling" options and show the resolution choices. Happens on my work 2018 15" macbook and my 16". No solutions for you, unfortunately!

When I hold option down and choose Detect Displays it still says 5K HDR. Is it because my 5kk2k is the business version? I have to edit the OP cause I actually have LG 34BK95U-W but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with my issues.

My external Dell gets named by its exact model number. Maybe LG are different. Or Catalina is buggy because I haven't seen fit to 'upgrade' any of my Macs to Catalina yet - and I'm using the monitor off a TS3 Plus as well. Does holding down Option when clicking on the Scaled button give you more options?

I have the exact same problem as you, except that for me… it's always in the "not working" scenario ;-) If I plug it in DisplayPort, it works just fine. In Th3, it's blurry, like you, with the same Display option.
