Do you think we can expect 4k UHD panel with 2x FHD retina this fall?

Doubt it really much.

This current panel in terms of resolution is the best of both worlds right now

Well, I'm pretty frustrated with choosing the 5500M 8 GB to be it's best dGPU offering. I'd be singing praises to Hell and back if they managed to put a 5700M of some kind in the 16" MBP, but yeah.. The dGPU is gonna cause the 2019 "16 MBP to age badly.

Yeah I agree, purchased the 5300M since the 5500M is useless for me.. back to the eGPU game in 2-3 years as usual or a better upgrade.

I have difficulty understanding why people are insisting on 4K so much. The difference in visual acuity to what Apple ships now is minuscule at best and given how good Apples panels are they actually look better in practice than many 4K laptop panels.

Personally, I’d rather see improvements in other areas: true dynamic range with well done local dimming, adaptable refresh rate, even wider colors.

So far it is perfect for me. Much improved over the MBP 15" 2016 for me.

What I would really like was a small app to set the power limit lower or turbo speed lower (but not turning it completely off) in order to find the right balance between performance and fan noise, when low noise is important. Could be extremely useful!

I love my 16" MBP-
The only wish I have is an opportunity to decide for myself whether I want to use the Radeon GCPU or not.
Unfortunately, the software always determines which mode is used here.
All the tools that the market offers cannot prevent this.
This would have the advantage that you could also influence the battery life in external monitor mode and the noise behavior of the high-speed fans.

Really liking my MBP16,1 and insanely better than the old MBP it replaced. Short list:
- A way to disable built-in monitor without going into clamshell mode when using with an eGPU and/or external display
- A slightly smaller trackpad
- Wish the Touch Bar was more customizable
- Wish the CalDigit TS3 Plus and other TB3 docks would support 96W/100W charging (and do realize this isn't an issue for most people, but it is for the video folks)

I still wish I could buy a Core i9 desktop with 128GB+ RAM...

Smaller trackpad? No thanks. Love the big one.

Try bettertouchtool for the Touch Bar.

And BTW the 2019 I9 iMac can be user upgraded to 128GB.

It's great machine and I'm very pleased with it. I can only nitpick: maybe a little lighter and just one legacy USB port.

The iMac is a nice machine, but it's a "desktop" with built-in monitor. Not exactly what I'm looking for. There's clearly an opening for a MacMini upgrade/update and an iMac refresh. Considering a MacPro7,1 but cost and finding Core i9's are more suited for most of my work than Xeon's. If I'm going to be stuck with a built-in monitor, at least let me actually use it as a monitor whenever I want.

In all my testing, the MBP16,1 with eGPU comes close to or surpasses many 2019 iMac configs.

Overall, so far, I am pleased.

Top of my list for nitpicking is the video camera [webcam]

In the future, I would love the purchasing option of no touch bar, as I rarely use the thing.

No wifi 6 does not affect me, yet at least. :)

Low-resolution screen. If you've ever used a 4K 13" Dell laptop, for example, you know how good a laptop screen can look. This is a 16" and it's only 3K. Everything is fuzzy compared to my iPad, my phone, and 4K Windows laptops.

From most bothersome to least bothersome:
  1. Fan noise. It's way louder than 15-inch MacBook Pro.
  2. Bulky. I wish Apple would shrink the bezels further, matching the width and height of 15-inch MacBook Pro. I wish it was lighter, but I rather carry a heavier notebook with 100 kWh batteries.
  3. Questionable latch design. Very subtle difference but MacBook Air has much more usable latch. Very obvious which side is the front and way easier to open.
  4. Display. I wish the display is 2x retina resolution (3584 by 2240 instead of 3072 by 1920), local dimming zones, and HDR support.
  5. Not enough ports. I am fine with all USB-C/TB3 connectors. But 4 just isn't enough for me. It is made worse by the fact that there are no bus powered hubs that has more than 2 USB-C ports (which amounts to 1 additional USB-C port). 6 would be perfect.
  6. Headphones jack on the wrong side.
  7. Few outdated components, such as 720p camera, Wi-Fi 5, and USB 3.1 Gen 2.
Other than these 7, I am very happy with 16-inch MacBook Pro. It's fast with great keyboard. Few wishes and nitpicks but can't complaint.

Almost everything is great.
Except heating (and noise) while the Macbook connected to an external display. So this is the only problem for me now.
Also i would prefer it without a touchpad. It's ok, but just not useful for me, and in some cases phisical buttons would be more convenient.

Which GPU do you have? Have any software updates resolved the issue? I'm planning on running 2 4K external monitors and I don't know if I should get the 5300M or 5500M 4GB.

I feel like the touchbar needs to tilt up or something to be useful to me. I only use my mbp open in bed and it’s impossible to see the touchbar making it completely useless. Other than that I love everything about it.

Could you please share a photo taken in dark room with black background with %100brightness to discuss backlight bleeding. www.lightbleedtest.com may help you. Thanks

I did this, and though my iPhone can pick up some minor unevenness, I have to stress that it's not at all visible to the naked eye. The differences are very much enhanced by the iPhone’s attempt to recover a visible scene; and the brightness and tones pictured are not realistic.

If it isn't visible to the naked eye, I'd say that's acceptable to me. It's the most even LCD panel I've seen on a MacBook (my last being the 2015 15”), so I'm happy with that aspect of it. Compare that to one of the examples on that site; in this case a Surface laptop, which has noticeable bleed and dim edges.

I'd still like OLED, a faster refresh rate and 4K resolution though!

Always feels like the "black screen with 100% brightness in a dark room" test is really looking for a problem that under normal circumstances doesn't really matter.

It's not a scientific test, but I think you can clearly see that evenness is good or very good on my MacBook Pro and average, unacceptable or poor on that Surface laptop. If I were to put text on the MacBook screen (to match the Surface) I think the difference would be even more dramatic.

Backlight bleed was a problem in Apple laptops for many years (and possibly still is for some of the cheaper models like the Air), to the point where some argued it was an unavoidable weakness of LCD technology. It's clearly not however if backlight bleed can be reduced to the point that it's not perceptible.

The only thing I absolutely hate about this machine is the crappy AMD drivers for the dGPU causing;
- Kernel Panics
- High wattage usage when using external displays (in turn causing excess heat, and excess fan spin/noice).
This!!
It's also so clunky and heavy. The screen is beautiful but the overall package weight is horrendous. The nail in the coffin for me is the fan noise when connecting to an external display. Why???

I can’t comment on the external display and power issues, but in no way would I say the 16” is “clunky“ or “horrendous[ly] heavy”. It’s thinner and lighter than the 2015 15”, and for that you get a lot more power and a (marginally) bigger screen.

They could make a super thin and light 16” if they were willing to forgo the dGPU and use a lower power processor (and shave the battery back accordingly) but I’m happy with it keeping higher power parts, especially the dGPU.

The i9 is a bit of a hot mess, but at least it’s powerful enough for most portable applications, if not most desktop applications.

I agree, the 16" is only clunky or heavy if you want an Air or 13"... if you want a 16" laptop then it's thin and light as far as 16" laptops go.

Love the machine in general. Had the kernel panics when sleeping, and battery life seems to be abysmal for me. I’m finding some threads for fixes around but now I have the task of researching and executing the fix..

  1. Totally discharge the battery
  2. Leave the discharged laptop for a further hour
  3. Charge to 100% without using it
  4. Leave it charged at 100% for a further hour or more without using it
  5. Unplug and use until battery is flat
  6. Repeat above 1-4 one further time
My first one had a battery health of 89% out of the box and once I conditioned it it was much much better, hitting 99%
