Recently i bought a new 16" MacBook Pro, just turned on the battery charge was just only 7%... once configured i downloaded coconut battery to see its status. In addition to showing a degradation only after 1 charge cycle, the battery is much older than the date of manufacture of the macbook. Since this is my first macbook, is this normal?

yes mine was built mid to late December but battery made very early November... remember the laptop is build date but there is also dates of screen and all other components of laptop too. Not too worry about dates see how it performs which is the important item of concern.
Good Luck

What is the issue? Give it a week to see what it shows.
OP is speaking about age of battery in comparison to build date of laptop, and how they differ.

Gotcha, of course the manufacture date of the battery is going to be before the build date of the laptop.

Hmmm, what happened to manufacturing in China between December of 2019 and March of 2020???

Unassembled batteries always have an older date. Due to safety reasons, the component is shipped by ground. So it's often one of the oldest components in a new notebook.

If you ask people with top-case replacements for their 2015-2019 MacBooks, you'll notice the battery manufacturing date is a few months old.
