Ran into a couple of issues with a 16 Pro:

1. Charging
Put it on the magsafe charger at ~57% last night. Woke up to the phone at 34%. The graph shows that it was ”charging” yet somehow discharged battery?

Has anyone had this happen either to their 16s or prior phones? This is the first time I’ve experienced something like this on an iPhone. Same Magsafe charger too, so nothing has changed with the charging hardware.

2. Wifi

I have also been having wifi issues with this device since setting it up yesterday, while our other 16 Pro/Maxes have been fine both during and after setup. Apps would just not load content intermittently, and the message would say bad connection/connection lost/make sure you are connected to the internet depending on the app.

I’m leaning towards exchanging it for a different unit anyway but wanted to see if anyone else has experienced either of these issues.

Zero issues with a 10ft anker USB C cable plugged in via an apple 20W brick. I’ll have to try the MagSafe puck on my desk at some point.

What I found weird is it shows the charging indicator in the graph but the battery level is decreasing at the same time. I’ve never seen that before

I had similar issue on MagSafe all night — it charged to my 95% limit but didn’t hold it there, discharging to 91% before I woke up

Wait a few days to let the battery optimize. It's normal for a brand new phone.

As for WiFi, try forgetting the current WiFi and connect using 5Ghz (WiFi 6) or 6GHz (Wifi 7).

When you have a % limit set, optimized charging doesn’t work. You can have either or— either a specific charge % limit, or optimized charging where it charges to 80%, holds it there, then charges to 100% before you wake up.

There is no option to combine them.

Then how come my 14+ periodically has that battery optimization message and I don't have a % limit set.

I always charge mine to 100% so shouldn't there be no battery optimization message ?

BTW, I will see today (if UPS delivers) if this happens on my 16 Pro....

I had an issue with my VPN toggling on and off constantly. I deleted my vpn and settings, reinstalled, and it fixed my WiFi issues.

Battery optimization message? I don’t think anyone who is describing charging issues mentioned a battery optimization message.

I’ve never received such a thing on any iPhone I’ve owned!

I notice there was an iOS update for iOS 18 for iPhone 16 bug fixes, but it didn't fix the issue. All morning today the phone will show charging on mag safe but not increase the charge. All I can do to charge it is plug it into a USB-C cable. I have the charge limit set to 100%, Optimized Battery Charging Off, and Clean Energy Charging Off. My model is the 16 Pro Max 1TB. My roommate has the iPhone 16 Pro Max 512MB and it is charging fine on mag safe. Something is definitely up.

I just topped mine off back to the 95% max on USB-C.

Must be some sort of bug with MagSafe. Probably just a software update…

I put my 16 Pro on my MagSafe charger on the nightstand when I went to bed last night (at 35% charge), it was 100% when I got up this morning. No charge limit set, Optimized Battery Charging on (which obviously hasn't kicked in yet).

Bumping this because it happened again last night. Phone shows that it was "charging", but the battery kept draining and woke up to 11% battery.

Same phone, case and charger so I'm not sure what is going on. Battery life has been terrible (~5hr SOT). There's no inventory in any of the nearby stores, or I would have already exchanged it for another unit. Disappointing.

That’s not good, you could let Apple run diagnostics on it at the Apple Store but if the iPhone isn’t crashing or restarting constantly it’s more than likely a software issue and 18.01 is around the corner because there are a lot of bugs. On mine things settled down after all the photo processing ended around Sunday. I ordered one of the new mag safe chargers with a 30 watt charger because with this larger battery the original mag safe charges too slow in my opinion.

Thank you, I think that's definitely a possibility and I'll just hold on to it until 18.0.1 is out, but maybe reserve another phone for pickup just in case. Return window closes next Friday and it feels like store inventory hasn't been great this year.

The Apple Store employees took a quick look and agreed that something wasn't right, but said that since I'm in the return window it's probably easiest to order another phone online and return this one. They had none in stock to exchange at the time, though.

I completely erased the phone, unpaired my watch and set everything up as new yesterday instead of restoring from backup.

My wifi and battery drain while using seemed to have improved, but I woke up again this morning to a discharged phone. Ugh!

I have been using the Beats case and wonder if that might the culprit? The charger works just fine with other phones so I know that's not it. I tried a 16 Pro Max and it charges normally. I'll try it with the Apple Silicone case tonight I guess.

I'm having the exact same issues with my iPhone 16 Pro.

Apple has had me do all sorts of trouble shooting including wiping the phone and restoring from my backup, wiping the phone and setting up as new, ran diagnostics etc...
I am using NO case and have tried multiple Qi/Qi2/magsafe chargers. Apple said it must be a hardware issue and to request an exchange form the carrier. But my gut says it's software related.

I decided to just return mine and buy a new one since I was still in the return window. I bought directly from Apple. New one works flawlessly. The old one also had terrible battery life.

It definitely wasn’t software in my case - I had erased everything and set the original phone up as new and it still wouldn’t charge. I did a phone to phone transfer to my new phone with the same settings, and have had zero issues. Same iOS 18.0 build, same case, same charger.

I would recommend swapping it out if you are able so you have peace of mind.

I've charged my battery twice now from 100 to 0 and back to 100 again- but my battery cycle shows 4 ? does it count 100>0 as 1 cycle ? i would have thought a full cycle would be 100>0 and 0>100 again. :(

I’ve got a new one on the way. Hopefully the new one works

Me too. Force start, wiped, Genius bar visit, diagnostic download (no issues). Finally a new phone and still same issue.

I went into settings , display and brightness, and turned off ( always on display) . That seems to have helped a lot. Fixed the wifes iPhone 16 pro also.
