OK, what a week. I was out of the country and couldn't get on a wireless network with my old version 3GS that my wife could with her 3G. Did a network reset, rebooted and stuck on Apple logo.
Waited a week, got home, put in DFU. Great, got it back to a clean 3.1.2 restore, used BlackRa1n and started the long process to get back my beloved tethering.
The first Cyndia required reboot got stuck in the Apple logo again. Figured oh well, just do it for a second time, no luck.
Now I am at a white screen and can't restore error 1601.
I see that there is a program that fixes that error with everything but the 3GS.
    What now?
Is there any hope? What about getting to 3.1.3 using Apple's server and then downgrading? But will I be able to tether? I don't mind spending money on mywi if needed to get tethered.

Try another USB port or use a different computer.
