I've been talking and working with Drew from Micro SATA Cables for the last few months about an alternative solution to the rather expensive 2012 iMac dual drive kit from Maxupgrades.

I first reached out to Drew after the launch of the new iMacs and seeing the demand for the option of a 2nd internal drive. The result of the his hard work the last few months work is a prototype kit that should be much cheaper and more simple than the Maxupgrades alternative.

I just received my prototype kit, and was surprised by the size. Very barebones and basic. To my knowledge, there will be no mounts, tape, or fancy extras included, and the price should reflect that. Just the standard cabling and adapters allowing the 2nd drive share power from the single SATA port, and the Blade SATA Adapter.

I will be doing some testing with it this week, and reporting back with results, and pictures. I will also post some pictures of the kit later tonight or tomorrow.

This is great news for those of us who have been waiting for a dual drive kit for the new iMacs, but haven't been able to swallow Maxupgrade's $120+ price tag. :)

More info to come soon!

EDIT: Here are some photos of the kit. Very simple. Only potential problem I could imagine is whether or not there will be sufficient power for two separate drives. With two efficient 2.5" SSDs or HDDs, I don't see it being that much of a problem, but the stock drive plus an additional drive may be underpowered. I suppose we will find out soon!

For the average user, adding a second internal drive (or any internal modification) may be unnecessary.

This modification is more directed towards power users, and people who enjoy/don't mind tinkering with their computers.

I got my prototype earlier in the week also. Will be installing it this weekend. I'll be using a 4TB seagate 5900RPM drive and a Samsung SSD. Let's see how it goes

i guess my question is...isn't opening the current iMacs something that can't be done?

Well, apple certified engineers can. Others can but of course if they break anything ... well, oops. For either one though it is not exactly a walk in the park.

OWC evangelizes doing upgrades yourself on prior macs. Even THEY recommend for people not to open the 2012.

The 2012 iMac is actually one of the easiest to open, but does require buying a new tape kit.

The glass and screen and no longer seperated, eliminating a lot of the risk in getting dust trapped between them. You just take a guitar pick, work it around the screen, and pop it off.

Very simple, and many of us have already done it. Check the 40+ page thread "Rip Those iMacs Open!" for more details.

Waiting for you results…

I am assuming there was an issue, but would still like to hear about your installation. :)

No issues for me, apart from trying to figure out where to put the SSD, and where to route the cables :p

However, I did notice one of the drives runs at SATA2, not SATA3 speeds. I've inquired about this, and will update this thread when I get more information.

Just got confirmation that the final version will have SATAIII speeds for both drives, and will ship for around $40.

The cables have also been changed to make them more clean and workable within the unit.

Very nice & Thanks for sharing with us.

I'm not quite sure yet, but I believe it will be fairly soon. Will keep this thread updated!

So much unused room on the new iMac internal layout. I would rather Apple uses regular SATA III SSD rather than the proprietary blade connector and use up all that empty spaces.

Great job for the cable, anyway.

It looks like it's retailing for $80 now :/
