Hello folks,

I have seen a very nicely presented forum of how well the Iris Pro functions seen here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1662978/, however I haven't come across one similar that shows FPS at different settings for just the regular Iris found in the 13". I'm by no means a pro-gamer, just occasionally enjoy games from time to time.

I was wondering if we could start off a form with people inputting some numbers of results? Benchmarks, sure they show performance gains from year to year, but I'm hungry for some real world numbers.

I did come across this form: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1657520/, but that was primarily a comparison on hd5000 vs hd5100.

So, on late 2013 13" macbook pros, can people report what FPS (min/max/average) they're getting with the associated settings (resolution, pre-selected eye candy) and also what specs (2.4/2.6/2.8) are in your computer for the following games:

D3
GW2
SC2
COD Black Ops

Much appreciated on this one. If I've missed a form that is already doing this, then my apologies!

I don't have benchmarks but I can say don't expect too much. If you want an estimate, look at the "13 MBA benchmarks, and add about 10% to those numbers or so, and you should have a decent idea of where the 5100 will be at for those games.

I think the only real hope for integrated graphics with better gaming performance is if Crystalwell (the eDRAM in Iris Pro) gets included in more than the quads.

Yeah I figured as much. Just based on what someone posted in the Iris Pro (I know it had crystalwell... Made integrated graphics look mighty impressive link is above). But right as you've said benchmarks are showing on 10% gains in comparison to a MacBook Air. Still curious though what levels people are seeing in some games.

I've done benchmarks for the Geforce GT 750M on my new unit, but unfortunately I have no way of disabling it to test even the Intel Iris Pro 5200, and don't have access to a unit with the 5100.

It would be nice if more people with the lower end graphics solutions would do benchmarks for people :D

The only one I tried is PlanetSide 2 - its barely playable to me since I'm used to a lot better frame rates from the desktop.

Medium quality, medium textures, everything else low, checkbox stuffs off (no occlusion/motion blur/etc), shadows off, flora off, 1280x800, high 20s - mid 30s. Didn't try getting into any large fights, but its decently not too bad to look at and play.

It should probably cope decently with some of the less taxing games like COD, Bioshock Infinite, etc... but its definitely not there yet for BF3/BF4 level of gaming.

for comparison, my 750M gets 35-45 fps on high at 1920x1200

i'm running bioshock infinite on low right now with 1280x800 resolution and it's still a bit choppy during fight scenes. it's really not made for gaming (i'm even gaming in bootcamp for crying out loud). but it still looks really nice. looks nicer than the console version tbh

I recieved my 13" 8gb/256gb yesterday. So far i have put bootcamp with windows 8 and tested:
Dow2 - playable at 1440x900 medium/high no aa (ave of 30fps)
Wargame airland battle - 1680x1050 medium settings (30-40fps)
Coh2 - unplayable 1280x800 low 15-20 fps
Insurgency 2 - 1280x800 high settings (60-80fps) optimised for 60fps2
DOTA 2 - 1440x900 high settings no AA (30-40fps)

Still to test
Sc2
Shogun2
Cs go
Cod bo

So far i am prtty pleased. It is great for stategy games which i mostly play. Not so good for fps but i have an alienware 17 for heavy gaming

You also testing GW2?

Thats the only laptop game I will play, the rest is on PS4. Deciding between Air i7 and rMBP i5

Yeah I'm right there with you. Anyone have any GW2 results? I'm just amazed at how well it was performing on the 5200 iris pro, but I guess that's more so a result of the eDRAM.

Hi Ninja,

I think Arena Net offered a demo of it a few weeks back, but there appears to be no current GW2 demo available so it's stuck to people who have purchased the game. Appreciate the offer though!

im interested too...

currently i play d3 and lol on my 2011 mba when im on the go...

they both run ok with all settings set to low, but in native resolution (1440x900).
but both look like crap. blurry, mud colored crap.

im looking forward for my rmbp to look far better (gfx quality)

Games that im Interested on:

Skyrim, Crysis 3

Would it run Deus Ex HR? In OS X from the App Store?

Is there a difference between the GPU in the 2.4Ghz i5, and the 2.6Ghz i5?

no difference.

Deus Ex should run well i think.

Seems like Iris can handle gaming quite well. Better than I expected at least. Has anyone tried Max Payne 3?

I'm hoping that Apple demands Iris Pro for the next refresh in all the future Iris offerings, not just the quads. Seems like the Iris Pro (not Iris) would be where I'd consider it decent for occasional gaming on the 13" screen ie. 1440x900 resolutions with medium settings and 40-ish+ fps on some more demanding games.

Whoa, I am guessing you are asking too much from Iris for those two 3D-heavy games. Definitely need discrete GPU for decent gaming experience on those two.

look at my previous post in this thread. within that are some details for Skyrim and other games.. Skyrim, i'm currently running with high textures, 16x anisotropic filtering, FXAA, actor and objects fades at medium.. getting an avg around 45+fps at 1280x800

For anyone interested in how well WoW performs in OSX

2560x1600

Everything on Ultra except:

Shadows off
Liquid detail low
SSAO off
AA off

~25-30 fps in crowded areas

Haven't tested raids or instances yet since it was just the trial.

I'll be installing windows 8.1 and will report back with the results.

Would you be able to test SC2 and CS GO on the OS X side and let us know? and give results for the retina resolution? That would be insanely amazing, thanks. :)

sounds good! on windows 8 bootcamp?

is 8 better for gaming than 7?
edit: seems like that there is only a slightly difference in performance between both
