Wanted: Gaming Results - Iris 5100 Only

sounds good! on windows 8 bootcamp?

is 8 better for gaming than 7?

yes, windows 8.1 via bootcamp. i do notice a bit of a fps increase with 8.1 than 7.. i think it does a better job of handling background services, so you have less unnecessary ones running in the background.

Would anyone please share their impressions on how games look at non-native resolutions? Since the computer can't handle games at 2560x1600 obviously, I know I'll have to run games at lower resolutions, and I'm 100% fine with that, but as you surely know, running anything at non-native resolutions results in blurriness/blockiness or other fun things, at least when looking at a GUI such as Windows or OS X. The problem is somewhat lessened in games.
Full-resolution screenshots would be great if you can spare the time!

Also, I expect I'll be running most games in Boot Camp. Do you just start the game and set the resolution to what you want within the game? I imagine I'd want to run most games at 1440x900.

Note: I'm well aware this isn't a gaming computer, and I have a high-end PC for gaming, but I just want something capable when I'm traveling. Point is: I'm not picky, I just want to know what I'm getting into.

I've done benchmarks for the Geforce GT 750M on my new unit, but unfortunately I have no way of disabling it to test even the Intel Iris Pro 5200, and don't have access to a unit with the 5100.

It would be nice if more people with the lower end graphics solutions would do benchmarks for people :D

Find and get gfxCardStatus, it will let you disable the Dedicated.

He is talking about doing gaming benchmarks in Windows. gfxCardStatus won't help you there.
I have searched the web up and down and have not found a single person that successfully enabled the Intel GPU in Windows.

It's my understanding the in order to use the Iris GPU in windows you need to boot Windows via EFI.

But Boot Camp at the moment use a BIOS emulation layer on top of EFI. So unless you hack the boot manager to get Windows started via EFI, there is no way the iGPU will work.

EFI boot works on the newer MBPs as they got uptaded to UEFI 2.0 apparently. It doesn't fix the problem though as far as I have read so far. It may be easier to find a fix with these EFI boots but there still needs to be some kind of hack.
The best chances are the linux folks who find something that can be used for windows too. Somebody for Windows managed to get the Intel GPU active via some efi commands but didn't manage to make the muxer switch the video signal source, ergo the display stayed rather black. EFI seems to boot even OSX per default on the dGPU always. It is just that OSX has a driver to switch the iGPU on while running and the muxer around.
For Linux there exists gmux which apparently gets the mux switching done but there are issues with the gpu drivers because of some wonky incomplete local info about the GPUs.
For Windows I have yet to read of anything like gmux so the best chance is to boot with the iGPU already active. This would atleast give access to quicksync and a cooler notebook without external screen support.

Booting via EFI alone isn't going to fix it, it just makes it a little less impervious.

I've also reply on another 3d.

GUILD WARS 2 ON HD5100 - rMPB 13" late 2013

Medium setting so things like shadows, texture, reflections etc on MEDIUM
Resolution more than 1280 x 800 cause I use external monitor (don't remember...somenthing like 1400x1000 with 2 black bar on the sides).
FRAME LIMITER AT 30 FPS
25/30FPS - most time at 27-28 - some fan noise when you are playing for some minutes

FRAME LIMITER AT 60 FPS
25/45FPS with fan noise full-time ;)

Anyway, I've noticed that gaming with full battery or charger plugged in can give little better performance (2-3 FPS gain so full time at 28-29 FPS with FRAME LIMITER AT 30FPS).

For anyone interested in how well WoW performs in OSX

2560x1600

Everything on Ultra except:

Shadows off
Liquid detail low
SSAO off
AA off

~25-30 fps in crowded areas

Haven't tested raids or instances yet since it was just the trial.

I'll be installing windows 8.1 and will report back with the results.

great! so this is the rmbp 13", right?

Whoa, I am guessing you are asking too much from Iris for those two 3D-heavy games. Definitely need discrete GPU for decent gaming experience on those two.

Nope. Skyrim around 50fps with about medium settings.

It's still not possible.

Haswell Macs no longer emulate BIOS on top of EFI; Windows runs natively in UEFI via Boot Camp.

That said, when starting up Windows, Apple did something to the EFI that forces the iGPU to be disabled if a dGPU is present.
