I've got a 12" iBook G4 with the standard ATI Mobility Radeon 9550 graphics chip. I bought myself a 20" widescreen monitor that I've got running at 1680x1050 resolution with millions of colours using the Screen Spanning Doctor hack.

My problem is that whenever I maximise a video file in VLC, every few seconds I get flashes of what looks like a scrambled version of the other windows behind it. The problem goes away when I reduce the colours to Thousands from Millions, but this causes blotching on many pictures and it's annoying.

Is there anything I can do to stop the problem, other than running in Thousands of Colours all the time? It seems to me like I'm pushing my graphics chip to its maximum and there's nothing I can do without upgrading to an MB or MBP, but I thought I'd ask just in case there was anything that could be done.
