I went with the 16 GB, for the reason that iPad is only a toy for me. No need to worry about running out of space. Besides, I always have my Macbook with me even during traveling to swap files. This is also a first generation product that I don't plan to keep for a long time. To minimize my loss when I do sell it for upgrading to the new model, the rule of thumb is to buy the cheapest model available now.

I agree with this. I don't plan on using the iPad as an iPod. I won't be uploading any videos or music on it, just apps. I think 16 GB is enough for apps alone.

8GB iPod Nano for music, and 16GB iPhone for videos. im guessing i should go for a 16GB for iPad 3G. wont get it till early may.

If I've got 10 average size movies, 1000 photos and about 50 apps would that all fit on a 16gb? Cheers.

What is an "average size" movie? for HD buffs, this is 4GB-12GB for a 2 hour movie, for others it 700MB for the same flick. Also TV shows are far smaller then movies.

But let's assume you are talking about full movies bought using iTunes. HD is ~4GB and SD is ~1.5GB. So you disk usage for 10 movies is 40G in HD or 15GB in SD. Add ~5GB for photos and apps and your at
45GB for 10 HD movies, 1000 photos and 50 apps - 64GB iPad
20GB for 10 SD movies, 1000 photos and 50 apps - 32GB iPad

So in one week you already are using 2 gigs. Tack on the 2+ gigs that the OS eats up and your 16 gig iPad would now only have 12 gigs of storage. I think your post actually is a great reason why 16 gigs is going to be too small.

I was referring to my iPhone. I have only used 2 GB of storage since last July. Including the OS I still have 29.3 GB free space. So, the 32 GB iPad will be more than enough for my needs. I'm still on the fence whether I want the 3G or just the WiFi. After all, I have the iPhone if I really, really need the internet, etc. The iPad would mainly be used in my home so 3G is not necessary. Oh, decisions, decisions, decisions🙁. How many "i's" can one own? Lets see; iPod, iPhone, iMac, MBP (should be iMBP🙂).

a 2hr movie in mp4 format at 700MB?? Please tell me what program you are using (i want it) because the smallest I could imagine getting a 2hr movie is about 1.2 gigs at the lowest. I use Handbrake.

Frankly your much better off with 1.2GB or larger. I find any lower to be hard to watch on a larger screens, but they may look OK on an iPad/iPhone. I know several people with large libraries of these over compressed vids.
If you really want to try, you can do it on Handbreak. Do a 2 pass encode with an average bitrate of .6 or .7mbs and set the audio to re-encoded for 2 channel (or pro-logic) at 128kbs. You could also play with altering to output resolution to reduce compression artifacts.
