Wow this has caused a stir hasn't it. I still believe they are different. My new phone feels lighter and does not get as cold as the old one implying a different kind of metal has been used. The volume button is also more recessed than the old phone which was much easier to push. Maybe it's a UK thing, I don't know.

So now you are saying it's metal, not plastic?

I saw this too - but I was going around the far side of the moon at the time and thought it was somehow altered due to moving through the VanAllen Belt. Guess I was wrong.

I am sure that if they did change the material that it is made of every reviewer in the world would be all over it. I doubt it has changed at all!

The materials used in the iphone have been questioned before. An argument was made that in the "Will It Blend?" video, the only things remaining post blend were a pile of black powder, a small cloud of dust, and the metal bezel.

Also, Phil Torrone, who offers an iPhone engraving service, said the back was "nice plastic".

HAHA thanks for the heads up on the "will it blend" thing....I just found it on youtube and its pretty funny :D

I am gonna back up the OP. I JUST got a 16 Gigger yesterday, and the first second I had it in my hand, it felt WAY different. I noticed it right off.

I read this post, and went back and looked at it. Feels AND sounds like plastic when you rub it. The "iPhone" and other lettering is not stenciled/inked on as before, but impressed into the material. This one is NOT the same as the old one- definitely different material, different imprint, weight... and, yess, lack of coolness. Not as hot, either, when running.

All in all, feels a LOT cheaper.

Nah, he's just smoking the same thing as the thread starter. There is no difference in a phone purchased today as there is a phone purchased on June 29. They are 100% the same. What is up with people lately?

I have a 16GB and it is in no way different than my 2 8GB phones.

I exchanged my 8GB for the 16 and they feel absolutely identical. I just picked my phone up off the chilly coffee table and the silver backing was ice cold while the black plastic on the bottom felt much warmer. Feels like metal to me.

My serial number on the back is etched just like my 8GB was.

Hello everyone first post on here, just picked up a 16gb iphone (my first iphone) i love it. drove 2 hours to philly just to go to an apple store for a few apple items (2nd gen nano laynard headphone thing, case for the iphone etc)

i went with incase's leather iphone case where i slide it in and snap the top i like it.

So... The OP and his backup know how to get some free press?

Post picts to sustain your claims and make it more fun with mockups.:D

Man, you guys are NASTY... why all the venom? We are just posting things we have noticed. Why the hell would I want "free press"; what do I gain here? My ONLY motivation on this site is to share information. Personally, I would rather the free expression of thoughts and ideas... not to be shot down because somehow what I have noticed does not agree with your Apple World Domination agenda. Whatever. Is it not even possible that Apple would make a change... and maybe that change is just STARTING to happen? I guess not- Apple will continue to make things ONLY as they have in the past, and never make any changes ever again. Nor would Apple ever CONSIDER having to different build versions of the same product out at the same time. There never were two different screens on an iPhone, for instance. Just couldn't happen. [/sarcasm]

Anyway, as I said in my first post, the "iPhone" logo and imprint on the back are "IMPRESSED" into the substance (whatever it is)... and I know this is NOT the case with my first one- that was "inked" on in some manner. I remember posts of some people who had smeared that serial number or EIMI when applying plastic wraps to the phone. That is impossible on this phone, as the numbers are embedded in "the substance" (a possible reason why Apple may be making this change, if they are, in fact, making one). You cannot tell me this is not a change (though it may have happened and been noticed a while ago; it has been a while since I have been active on this forum).

So, yes, I made a scan. Decided not to post it. For two reasons:

1) You will just say it is photoshopped (not that it really shows anything anyway- you can just kind of tell the numbers are imbedded. How is a scan going to show a different "feel" to the metal?)

2) I really do not care to. My word on this forum should be enough. I did not register here yesterday, nor do I only have 10 posts. I stand on MY record, and expect you to take what I say as my observed truth. I do not need to prove anything.

That said, I still say this feels different than my original iPhone. It feels Plastic-y. I never thought the original felt this way. Remember how when this first came out, everyone said how "solid" it felt? This one does NOT feel that way. Again, I tried to scan that "feel", but it did not work!

So I did a second experiment. I heated up a pin, and when it glowed red, I pushed it into the side, in about as inconspicuous a spot as I could find. It did NOT melt... so I guess it is a metal of some sort.

I will go to an Apple store today, and compare with what is on hand there. I will admit, maybe MY memory is flawed- I lost my iPhone in December. Perhaps I am confusing the feel of an iPod with what I am remembering as the feel of my iPhone. But perhaps not- I have never owned an iPod.

I will report back.

carfac: why do you think that scanning your iPhone will show us the difference in the material, why don't you shoot some pictures with a camera? Is that hard?

If you don't show evidence it's conflicting information against others who post that they have the 16Gb and no problem at all.

Instead of showing the evidence of the problem you have with your iPhone you prefer to add more to the story by saying that you can play the alchemist game, if you don't have a camera you can use a couple of mirrors with your same "plastic" iPhone...

A simple picture may show the difference, once you go to the apple store use one of the iPhones from the store and shoot both iPhones, then post.

I have an iPhone from the 3rd week of release and the lettering on the back is "impressed" so you may be recalling that part incorrectly.

Photo proof

I have both (well, one is my wife's) and I can confirm they are identical. The back is etched on both and as you can see they weigh the same.

Well, I am back- head in hand. I was wrong. I am sorry. It really DID feel different than I remembered. But after comparing it to the iPhones on display, I would say it is the same thing.

I will shut up now.

It's just cause a new phone feels a little different as the material is new and everything, hasn't been subjected to environment conditions and hands.
