This is some kind of sad joke. Like, "let's test that thing without spending anything and see what happens"? A 720p facetime camera in 2020???

What are you referring to here? The new M1 MacBook Pro? If so, I did wonder why they kept saying better camera quality but they didn’t explicitly say 1080p. If it’s still there same ****** 720p one, it’s just an embarrassment and absolutely unacceptable.

Something is clearly sketchy. They are only replacing the low-end models with their M1, maxed at 16GB of RAM, still keeping the more expensive intel models with 32GB of RAM. If M1 is so great, 5x faster, blah, blah, why are they keeping the "slower" intel models on the higher end?

720p

Personally I'd rather not have to pay Apple one cent for a better-than-adequate camera on a laptop or iPad that is going to be positioned below my chin looking up anyway. Seems stupid to me. That's not where you want to put a truly good camera. There's a whole ecosystem of peripherals that you can position optimally in your room for people who want to stream.

I am not a Apple user so far, but I bought a MBP 13" 2020 just 20 days!! ago, and now I feel a bit fooled to be honest. Why on earth a company releases the exact same product twice within 6 months?!?!??! And why the newer better is soo much cheaper (in my country the price difference is 600€ - ok 8 GB of Ram instead of 16GB) .. that's kind of a joke. I am bit annoyed tbh

It was common knowledge for many months that Apple would be releasing updated silicon Macs this fall. If you bout an Intel one less than a month ago, that's your fault for not doing any research.

I was waiting all summer, I waited 2 announcements of Apple .. only iPads and new iPhones... than I needed a new laptop for my job latest end of October... well I was sure they would announce them begin 2021 and I researched a lot on that, and till end of September most people didn't see another announcement coming. But yes, now, of course everyone knew it... like always!

It was rumoured to be coming, which sure isn't confirmation but Apple don't really confirm new announcements months in advance for any of their products.

If you are really that bent on having the most newest tech then there were enough rumours and mumblings in the community that they'd announce a silicon Mac this year.

Also 720p is silly, but it was silly last year, but this reveal makes sense to test waters. Its not a radical redesign (that would cause more people to buy). It's the lower end products (MacBook Air, mini and lower end MacBook pro are like their main hub of non pro customers) that are usually the products the "general public" go for, so as long as word works and iOS apps run then thats great for them. Would we love the thin bezels, hd cameras, Face ID, etc on a Mac, sure, but I don't think anyone would expect their first generation/reveal to have tht.

They made a few claims about improved performance through software, so it will be interesting to see what the first reviews say about it.

That seems to refer to selfie-algorithms, i.e. making you look nicer as an always-on effect the same way Snapchat does, and light balance optimization.

"The image signal processor in the M1 chip helps you look your best for every FaceTime call and video conference."

The M1 chip even helps you look your best. Highlights in low light have never looked better. Advanced noise reduction makes dark areas sharper. And face detection uses the Neural Engine to better adjust white balance and exposure levels for even more natural‑looking skin tones.

720 is 720. Software can't add resolution. And whatever the M1 is doing, any GPU could have.

M1 should for Air only, honestly including them in more serious workhorse such MBP and Mini is trade off in memory and external graphics department.

Previous iteration of MBP and Mini support more RAM and can be paired with beefiest GPU we can afford depending our needs.

You can still buy an intel Mac mini or 13” MacBook Pro. I am glad the put then M1 chip in all three models. If I were buying a new Mac today, I’d definitely go for one of these over an intel model with more RAM and eGPU support.

During WWDC 2020 conference Apple announced that it would offer Apple Silicon-based computers before the year-end. I think you must have overlooked this cause this information was available since June.

So after the reviews just showed up - it's clear that the 720p webcam is JUNK. Why, can anyone from Apple just say why?

Some decisions apple make are just not understandable and annoying. I heard someone writing here in this forum that the thin screen makes a good camera hard to install. My god, Apple can install a 4k60p cam in a pin if they want... it’s just they are

Well no one from Apple is going to be replying to you here.. its clear they think there is no issue with it as its in use on all MacBook models and has been for years. Most likely the sensor depth is limited with how thin the display panel is, which is why it cannot use for example whats in an iPhone front facing camera

That’s a bit naive thinking Apple is not capable to built in something better than a 720p camera in a laptop in 2020. (How the competitors do better then?)

Apple is in a lot of ways just a very ignorant and bullheaded company which tries to get a kind of world domination for their technology no matter what.
A other good example is their Face ID. The whole world is suffering with masks all days and Apple doesn’t adapt to that at all as if the Apple employees live in a bubble outside of Corona. releasing the iPhone 12 again with no other way than Face Id or typing a 6 digit code which is for many workers with masks very uncomfortable or even impossible.

I already explained why.. the thinness of the display panel.

Ok but in any case that’s not the point. A company like Apple is revolutionising almost everything but there 720p camera is not working even well for 720p. My 6 years old Logitech 720 is outperforming the MBP in every aspect. When it’s dark you cannot even use the MbP cam. My Logitech webcam was before corona around 25£ ... it’s just not acceptable ... and then you have 2 Thunderbolts to use an external webcam? well you see how problems add up?
