Every time I bought a computer in the last 20+ years, I got it with what seemed like a sufficient amount of memory. I always had to add ram within the next 2-3 years. So when I bought my most recent computer, I got it with twice the ram I thought would be sufficient (16 instead of 8). If possible at all, I'd like to get the same in a macbook. Simple experience.

I need denser SO-DIMMs. Hopefully 32 GiB will work on the early 2011 MBP.

I run a number of virtual machines simultaneously, so at least 16 gig is required. I'd be quite happy with a 32 gig ram footprint in a future MBP.

Open up Activity Monitor and list how much memory is used under each heading, or include a screen cap.

Then run Terminal and issue "sudo purge" and see how much memory is released. Often times it is file cache and such that sucks up free memory, so only having 1GB "free" doesn't necessary mean you're almost out of memory. You need to look at your "page outs" value and see if you're doing a lot of paging. Paging in is ok as long as you're also not doing a lot of page outs. See my screen cap above.

A system that utilizes most of its memory without actively paging out is more efficient than a system that has gobs of free memory.

After a restart isn't really a good way to check memory usage. It's kind of like asking someone to troubleshoot your problem after you've done things to wipe out any useful information. :D My screen cap was after being up for 10 days. To get a good idea of your memory utilization and pressure just use your Mac normally and then after a few days check Activity Monitor but DON'T restart before looking at it otherwise any useful stats will be wiped out.
