16GB RAM make any difference?

Im running 3 x windows 7 VM's permanently

so I went for 16Gb ram and never ran out yet 😀

Probably not for most people. But I do edit video here and there

Just wondering if I should change to 16g

I use virtualization, some heavy software development and occasional video editing.

I used to have 4GB ram @ mac book pro and recently upgraded to 16GB. To tell you the truth, the computer didn't become much faster, if at all... But here's why - while limited to 4GB I took good care of how much memory was used, and unloaded everything I didn't need, so that enough memory is available for the current process.

Now I can load everything I want, and just switch between applications. While every process under 16GB still runs the time comparable to 4GB config, it saves my time.

Even at this point, I think 16GB is more enough. I could have done fine with 8GB.

I agree totally. I was simply trying to comment on part of your statement (regarding VRAM size), not challenge it's overall validity.

I wasn't implying that you were wrong. I wasn't sure if the 512MB was the system reserved or the maximal allocatable RAM. I thought it was the latter. 😎

I have 12GB on on of my Macs and rarely ever get close to using all of it. 8GB would have been fine. 16GB? Wow. I'd never use all of that. 😱

16 makes all the difference. Its so cheap right now. To be able to buy it for $100 or less. $97 from OWC for 16gb and lifetime warranty is so cheap. Or other brands for 50 bucks or so. Even if you dont use it, who cares. Maybe you will one day. If the difference between 8 and 18 is 20 bucks its a no brainier over the next few years of your computer. I thought Id only need 8 but there have been several times this last week where I only have 6 gbs free. Glad I got 16.

I tried Mushkin first for 64.99 but it was defective causing crashes. It worked out that the G Skill was on sale right after that.

thats why i was asking if it was worth it.


but i see these online places are much cheaper.

Should be good. It is CL 10 so it's a bit better than a lot of the CL 11 chips out there. You may want to try the 1.35V version if you have the latest model but it is sold out for the Crucial version on Newegg and the Mushkin didn't work for me.

The G. Skill I got on sale for $44.99 is now $69.99 but it is also CL 10 and $10 less expensive than your Corsair. The G. Skill has worked well in my wife's so far for almost a month. I also used a G. Skill PC3-8500 set in my own MB and it has worked well to 8GB.
