RAM before SSD all day long. You can always use cloud storage or external if need be but you can't expand the RAM. This is even more important if you hold onto your Mac for a long time.
Why do you say that? There's 7 year old macs running fine with less ram.
Why buy something that in all likelihood won't ever get used. Thanks to OS X, if ram resources start getting tight, it will swap it out. I think people get too hung up on the ram now a days and forget that OS X has some excellent memory management. Its not like the Mac will suddenly stop working.

I have a 2008 MacBook which had 2 GB RAM. When I installed OS X Lion on it, it became very slow. It only got better after I put an additional 2 GB on it. And Lion was released just 3 years after I got the Mac. Now, the Mac is 6 years old and I cannot use it anymore even for basic tasks, as it became really slow.
As you cannot upgrade RAM anymore, it would be wise to get more if you intend to keep the computer for a long time.
