  • What? No handle? I'm disappointed!
  • Made for schools. You'd think they could cover the speakers...
  • I guess this raises the question about an eBook. PowerMac, PowerBook. iMac, iBook. eMac, ... get my point? So what will we see, G4 iBooks, G3 eBooks? That would give Apple a chance to use their fast G3 chips...
Just some thoughts...

No Handles...... makes them harder to steal!!! :p
Lack of speaker covers....... could be a problem... especially as you know what kids are like with pencils......

With regards to the eBook....... I think Apple have proven now!! anything goes... so why not!!! :p I think the iBook is priced pretty competitively though staring under 1k, the same as the eMac, so it might invalidate the need for an eBook......

I just dunno anymore........ :p

Can I complain now please?

lets look at this comparativly.
the original imac against the bottom of the line emac.
(ill talk in US dollars aswell)

imac:
15" CRT.
600 MHZ G3.
256MB RAM.
40GB HDD
16MB V/card.
CDRW.
$999

emac:
17" CRT.
700 MHZ G4.
128 RAM.
40GB HDD
32MB V/card.
ComboDrive.
$1249

a combodrive plus a new 17" CRT moniter doesnt cost 250 bucks. i know apple hardware cost slightly more than most other computers - but not its components.

plus since when does education get better V/card than consumers? if they are going to do this, they might aswell drop the original imac and sell these things.

I'd be willing to drop $250 on a 700mhz G4, a 17" monitor, and a combo drive, not to mention the video card. Got any to sell?

And if you're a school, not a student, you can get it for $999.

The consumer CRT iMac is on the way out. Apple wants consumers to have all that G4 LCD goodness oozing design points in their homes (they're great to talk about at cocktail parties), but giving an LCD to a first grader right after art class is an invitation to breakage.

Not sure about a G4 ibook! Maybe, I just dont know. We know that the 1Ghz G3 is much quicker than the current G3's + it runs cooler.

Has anyone seen the 1ghz G3???

Seriously, is there any computer using these 1Ghz Sahara G3s? If they were so great, then why doesn't anyone use them? Why wouldn't IBM use them?

Maybe they aren't that great after all.

I dont think anyone uses them. Isn't this because Apple has first dibs + they cant use them until Motorola get their finger out of their arse (G3's cant have a much higher Mhz than the G4 - pro - v's - consumer and all that)!

I think that Apple can do whatever they please. I've never heard of an agreement between Apple and Motorola that says they can't use a G3 with a "much" higher clock than a G4. Apple would be stupid to agree to such terms. NOTE - didn't the 600mhz iBook come out when the TiBooks were still at 400 and 500mhz? 20% seems like a lot to me.

Secondly, I don't think that IBM would agree to giving Apple first dibs in a scenario like you paint. Why would IBM hold back chips because Motorola doesn't have chips that are significantly faster (clock)? Doesn't make sense. More reasonably would be that Apple get 1st refusal on these chips and since they've been available for so long, that would mean that Apple would have declined to use them, freeing IBM to sell to whoever or to use them internally.

EDIT - I re-read your message. Dis-regard that first part about Apple's agreement with Motorola regarding clock speeds. But my point about IBM still holds.

What I meant was that Apple will not jump to a 1Ghz G3 while their top line powerbook is at 800Mhz. By all accounts the new Sahara is pretty quick compared to the older G3's *(doubled the on chip cache etc). IBM announced that the chips were sampling them quite a while back which means they must be available if apple wanted them.

Overall, the point I was making is that I believe that the ibook will stick with the G3 for time yet. It has plenty of life left in it. I believe apple will put a 700Mhz or a 750Mhz G3 in the next revision of the ibook.

This most certainly means we will be seeing a G4 in the iBook in MWNY.

Bye Bye G3. :D

They just updated the PB's. There wouldn't be enough of a gap between the iBook and the PowerBook. I wouldn't expect to see G4 iBooks until late this year/early next year near when the next PowerBook revision comes around...

(Oh wait, they just did that with the PowerMacs, and yet we still have G4's! Hmm, nevermind. )

jebus, i'm gone for a couple of days and look what Apple does...

*eats own foot*

Interesting design and concept... I echo the previous thoughts on price... i think until Apple drops the old CRT iMacs, the only educational depts. that will get these are graphics and journalism, because they want the most units for their bucks, faster processor and bigger screen notwithstanding...

But in time, i think this will be a big hit... certainly odd that Apple did this, when they were so close to being LCD-only... I kinda thought that was their goal...

:)

eMac, I wonder how long Jobs
has been holding back this one!
Apple´s educational sales will skyrise
with this machine.
What do you think?

seems like a good unit...i will keep my eyes open around campus

Hey, iGAV, thanks! You're very classy.

BTW, has anyone noticed the dimensions fo the eMac? Its a VERY solid engineering job.

1. Old iMac and eMac are the same depth exactly: 17.1"
2. eMac is just 0.8" higher and wider (15.8 v 15")
That is only about 5%!

Re: Pricing
The upcharge for students is weird...its way too much difference. Almost like Apple really doesn't want to sell them except to the schools.

I could see 500MHz and 600MHz G4 iBooks with 100MHz busses, and no L3 cache in June... For a while the iBooks were at 466 and the G3 powerbooks were at 500+ so I don't think many people will complain that much... once again, those who do not know the difference in the two G4 processors will probably be better suited with the cheaper iBook anyway. They'd feel clever for saving money, too ;)
