I had the logic board on my Mid-2010 MBP go out twice about 2 weeks apart (first one was maybe…. 8 months after purchase?). Anyways, long story short, I got the runaround until I took it to a real apple store (not an authorized 3rd party), turns out it was a manufacturing defect and they replaced it 100% free. The second time they actually shipped it to my house for free too. It was awesome. Hell, I even had dropped the thing on a big rock (not on the side the logic board was on though) and the inside was PACKED with sub-Saharan african sand haha.

So basically - take it to a real apple store, and just be super nice to the genius bar guys. There's a good chance they'll fix it.

I sure Apple has someway to unlock problems in computers that don't have Applecare registered.

My computer w/applecare had no problem until 3 weeks before the said applecare ended...got lucky...

i would suggest calling and asking them to extend your Apple Care.

i've heard stories of them activating Apple care a few weeks after the deadline.

after that, give them another call and set up a repair for your machine.
To the best of my knowledge that can't be done unless you purchased AppleCare during the 1-year warranty period. That is to say, you purchased AppleCare but forgot to activate it.

However, Sisyphus2112 definitely give Apple a call (1-800-APL-CARE) and plead your case. Ask to speak with a Product Specialist, because they are able to offer out-of-warranty repairs (though I'll be honest, it is very rare). Be kind, polite, and explain your situation. Be honest: tell them it's for school and you couldn't afford AppleCare. At this point, it certainly can't hurt.

Also, if you used a credit card to purchase your MacBook (any credit card, it doesn't have to be an Amex), give them a call and ask if your card automatically provides an extended warranty. You never know.

Good luck.

You should definitely plead your case at an apple store and hope a genius takes pity. I got a free new battery in exchange for a dying one that was 6 months out of warranty last December. The genius was great, but told me, "Don't come back if this one goes out."

That said, this is not the end of the world. Instead of having paid the $200 for Applecare, pay the $300 to get it fixed. It's only $100 you're out, dude. The new motherboard will be under warranty.

Look at the $100 as a cheap price to pay for the lesson.

Is there any way I can talk to somebody at Apple and convince them that I should be covered since the computer is so young? I appreciate any and all advice you guys can offer me. One of you might just be a lifesaver.

Thanks all,
Sisyphus

How did you pay for it? Some credit cards, such as American Express, offer an extension of the manufacturer's warranty. Also, some homeowner's policy cover failures due to accidents along with theft losses - another option to check.

If you need Applecare to have a machine for 3 years, then it's no more Apple computers for me.

I haven't bought Applecare either because of the assumption how good Apple supposedly is and my PC computers having never failed within 3 years.

Not to get off the original topic, but you don't NEED Applecare to have a machine for 3 years. Whenever you purchase a computer, no matter who makes it, there is always a chance that something will go wrong. Computers are machines, and machines break from time to time. Just because one person's computer had a problem 17 days out of warranty doesn't mean yours will. And just because someone is still using a Mac from 2002 with no problems whatsoever doesn't means yours will be perfect for 9 years, either. Most Apple computers will be fine for more than 3 years. But that's not a guarantee, of course. Choosing whether or not to purchase Applecare should be a decision you make based on your particular situation...how you treat the computer, if you can afford Applecare vs. the possibility of having to pay for a repair, etc.

Sell your Powerbook and some other stuff to cover the cost. It is an alternative.

17 days out of warranty, that's just plane bad luck. Too bad you didn't purchase Apple Care. I'd use the opportunity to treat myself to a new Mac and this time I'd be sure to pick up Apple Care.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.

people do realize that apple does not make the parts constituting the computer right?>??

looks like i'll be getting some form of apple care....

Whatever happened with this OP?

i would suggest calling and asking them to extend your Apple Care.

i've heard stories of them activating Apple care a few weeks after the deadline.

Contact Apple, if you can't drive there because of the distance, try calling the store and explaining the situation. Logic Board failure 17 days out of warranty should really get sorted.

Good luck.

These two seemed like the best option for me. If Apple lets the Applecare be put on, he could then just mail it in.

I'm actually about to try myself. I ordered my current mid-2010 MBP in late September 2010 and forgot to put Applecare on. I'm about to call and see if they'll still let me.

You know this post is so funny and self serving. You put your long sob story here clearly acknowleging the fact that A you had the chance to buy AppleCare and did not and B you are out of warranty. So what do you expect to hear? Someone on this site offer you $300 because you are yet another "poor college student" with your hand out? Fix it for free? There is no magic bullet here pal.
....

Not sure why you're picking on the OP. I think he got some good advice and options from his post.

The OP will have to drive back to the store to pick the machine up... So call it $270. Plus the opportunity cost of all that driving. For a chance that they might agree to fix the machine.

Lol. I hear that every day in my Econ class. Good to hear it outside of school for once.

To OP, call up Apple and try again. If not, use your schools computer lab until you can pay for the fix.
