I just pulled out my 17" DLSD PowerBook G4 out of storage and right on boot, the boot chime was overly loud and sounded extremely distorted, and there is this super loud static coming out of the speakers or headphone jack while the machine is on. I don't think the speakers themselves are blown (yet). Since the speakers will mute themselves when something is plugged into the headphone jack, I plugged in a AUX cable with the end cut off to prevent any further damage to the speakers. I tried resetting the PRAM but it doesn't seem to change anything. I assume the internal amplifier has failed?

Y recently pick up a PB 15" fw 800 with the same symptoms that you describe, this 15 inch model has 3 speakers. When I opened machine, the "hidden" speaker in the middle was blown and the cables for the right speaker was flat becouse of 20+ years pushing in a corner which doesn't sound at all.

The machine had personal info and it was running 10.3, never been opened, with the stock configuration, almost no music and a couple of videos, so I don't know if was blown or like the pro speakers for the cube just the quality of the material that hold the cone.

Here these machines are somewhat rare and parts are almost inexistent, so I hot glue the speaker cone otherwise it will hit and vibrate all over the place (really fun to see) and "revive" the cable, now I have stereo sound but for sure without any low - mid range.

Because I never owned one of those I never know what I'm missing until I can get a replacement.

Hope it helps, try open your pb and see what are the state of you speakers
