I am sure that would work great. When I walk into a lecture hall, I just need to tell everyone to move over so I can plug in my external display.

Is 17" laptop really required for lecture halls? Most people find even 15" too large for these situations. But I digress, I'm not saying Apple is right - or wrong - I'm just trying to analyze the situation.

I believe this is Apple's reasonong (again - don't convince me it's wrong, I have no personal opinion on this, I'm just "guessing" what Apple's views are): if you need more than 15", you should be at your desk. For everything lese, 15", 13" and 12" are good sizes for 99% of people.

Personally, I wouldn't mind a brand new 17" MBP. But I highly doubt Apple will make one.

Even a laptop is not "required". One could use paper and pen. It's a matter of convenience.

Also, many people who buy MacBook Pro 13" do so because it is much cheaper than the MacBook Pro 15", not because they prefer to have 13" display.

I do split screens and it wouldn't work as well on a 15" display and even less so on a 13" display.

I didn't even consider split-screen until I started taking notes during a class earlier this year. Pages on the right, Safari on the left -- worked fine for me on my 13".

It might "work fine", but it's very small.

As a side note, I can hardly believe that snapping abilities are only recently coming to Mac natively (BetterSnapTool has been absolutely essential to me).

With the 17", I can have windows in quarters even and it's very usable.

Sigh. I said it like two or three times - no point in arguing me, it's not my opinion, this is how Apple sees it. If you want to argue that opinion, go write Tim Cook or something, not me.

I only like the 17 inch for aesthetic reasons. Eventually everything will be projected out of a small device. The screen, the keyboard. Probably within most of our lifetimes. That'll make large real estate available in a small package.

I'd lean towards the display being transmitted to an augmented reality device over a projection method. It'll start with glasses, then evolve into something like corneal implants.

It'll cost about $6,000,000 for the procedure, but that'll be about half the cost of a fully loaded MacLook Pro at the time.

Unfortunately, Tim Cook's obsession with throwaway razor thin laptops almost certainly means that the 17" MacBook Pro is not coming back until he is fired.
[doublepost=1484321434][/doublepost]

Blah blah blah.

Excuses! Excuses!

Nothing can make up for having a smaller display.
[doublepost=1484321502][/doublepost]

Nah. It depends on when Tim Cook gets fired ... eer... I mean departs.
[doublepost=1484321648][/doublepost]

This is a bunch of nonsense.

Having higher resolution does not make up for having a smaller display.
[doublepost=1484321806][/doublepost]

That's not a certainty if Tim Cooks... err ... departs.

Dude, it's 100% certainly never coming back. I appreciate your optimism, but Apple is sending a crystal clear message that even the 15" is a device on the absolute extreme of sizes they'd be willing to make for a portable device.

I had hoped Apple might do something to totally change up their laptop products like move the Pro (or "Pro" from some perspectives :) ) to a new form factor like a 14" and 16" - the latter with a bezel-less display would be really close to matching the physical display (and certainly exceed the resolution) of the 17" MBP while the 14" would push the display area of the current 15".

Just as follow through: make a 13" Air retina to compliment the lineup, 12" MB, 13" AIR, 14" Pro, 16" +really+ Pro :D

I thought about this possibility, maybe because it's easier technology-wise. But at the same time you have to put on a head-set and blind yourself from everything else, which would make it really inconvenient. If it's just glasses and not a virtual-reality type thing then it wouldn't be so bad.

It seems pretty clear that Apple considered the market for the 17" and found it wanting. Nothing I've read indicates any 17" MacBook anywhere near ANY horizon, and it just doesn't make financial sense. Or practical sense.

Would love to read something from previous users of the 17" who doesn't now prefer a 15" or smaller btw...

Ex-2011 17" owner checking in. Would go back in a heartbeat after using my 15" rMBP 2012 for 3 years. Tried the 15" tbrMBP wasn't for me. Now I'm on an XPS 15" and doubting my decision about getting another 15" laptop. (Great laptop better than the tbrMBP but screen still feels cramped.) I might sell this one and get either a Alienware/Precision/Razer/Lenovo P70 17" once I finish my current project.

Sadly I don't think it's coming back, either. I thought it might after 17" retina displays would become more feasible, but alas, I think Cook's Apple has a very particular direction, unfortunately.

I've gone from 13" (non-retina), to 15" Retina, to now an older 17". I find the additional screen real estate to be invaluable, although I will say it can look a little large if you're using it on the go (but it's more stable and comfortable, by contrast).

My girlfriend has a 13" MBA that she likes enough, but she's often using my 17" when she needs to get stuff done as the extra screen space really helps.

Not only does it split screen two windows better, but it can have 4 quarter windows (or 2 quarters and one half) effectively.

She really dislikes carrying it, though, given it's footprint, thickness, and weight at 6.6 lbs (keep in mind it's now two bodies back). I don't mind the size too much since I carry it in a backpack anyways, but it'd be really nice if it got the new form factor treatment.

Even if they just had reduced the bezels around the display and bumped the current MBP to 14.3" and 16.3" or something, that'd had been nice.

I would have loved a 17 inch MBP... what a beast my old G4 17 inch was.. probably could put a 16 inch in the body of the older 15 inch. that would have been awesome... but not as thin as Apple likes it these days. Thin is in...but doesnt mean we have to like it

Just curious about how many here who used to have the 17" had a different point of view, and what their thoughts are.

I have both a MacBook Pro 17" and a MacBook Pro 15" Retina and the former is still my main computer.

Sure, I can set the rMBP 15 to have the same screen resolution the MBP 17, but it's just not the same as having a bigger display.

Definitely won't ever come out again, but my God, I sure do miss it and wish it was still made. Imagine how powerful of a computer that would be!
