That's never been the case, they always charge tax if you're shipping address requires it.

I paid $499 for the ADC membership which gave me 20% off the MBP so if you add everything up I paid around $40 for the ADC membership which was a great deal.

I think legally apple can charge you sales tax in your state for online orders IF they have an Apple Store in that state. I remember people complaining about newegg charging shipping tax and it turned out they had offices/locations in their state.

Apple HAS TO charge you sales tax if the have a physical store there...it's not Apple making money off tax they're required to hand that over to the state. But back to the original post he was asking if he should buy in store or online so I'm assuming he has a store in his area which would mean that tax issue doesn't make a difference. Unless you live near a state that doesn't charge tax and can easily travel there to purchase.

If you buy from Macmall.com they dont charge you tax. But then again its pretty much the same price with tax from Apple minus the student discount.

If you call your local store they should be able to give you an idea when they receive them.. I think online orders will get to ppl first.

So I'm hearing that the 17" MBP will be in stores February 2nd or 3rd. Is there any proof of this?

I'm also reading about 17" MBPs shipping as late as the end of February. Is this the case with completely stock 17" MBPs?

Is there any reason not to buy it in store on the 2nd/3rd if I am getting a completely stock 17" MBP? I don't think I'll have trouble finding one in stock, as there are Apple stores all over the place here.

Ive been curious on sales tax so ive entered diff state locations on the Apple site and they all required some amount of tax (diff rates though).

Institutional non-profits don't pay sales tax (e.g., your university's student computer.)

Sales tax is only charged if the purchase is made in-state.

Solution: Have your computer shipped out of state. ;)

You have to buy it from your local university store and then ship it out of state (probably to your home state.)

There's two sales here: sale from Apple to Computer Store (exempt as it's a non-profit.)

Sale from Computer Store to you (if it's an internet order, it's not taxed and if it's not, most stores won't collect another states' sales tax.)
