I was set on getting the matte display (wanted the best screen for post production on my photos shot with 5d Mk II)...The apple engineer informed me that not only was the contrast ratio better with the glass screen, but that the color accuracy was better as well (I was not aware of the latter). He said that it may be a pain when I'm in variable lighting environment, but as long as I could make sure there's not a window behind me (or something similar), the glossy would be much better. He also said that for Matte screens to reduce glare, they inherently cause refraction (or defraction, I can't remember) in order to defuse the light reflecting off the screen and that this reduces some of the color detail of the light passing through the screen to the user.

I thought about it and realized that about 85-90% of the time, I can control the light hitting my screen...so I figured I would put up with a little pain in the a$$ sometimes to have the best possible screen the other 90% of the time.

Hope that helps anyone who's having the same dilemma...

im in the same boat, was sure ill get the matte.... however my biggest concern is the difference between the matte and the glass panel?! its difficult to get any true information about the two different panels. why are they actually different? for some time i thought they just put out the glass but when the matte really is worse i have to rethink my decision!! im doing all of my color-work in controled light conditions because imo its not possible to work with colors under bad (bright) light neither with matte nor with glossy screens....
its a pain! :)
regards

Obviously didn't watch the '09 Keynote.

Just to clear up that post, I wasn't replying to the guy saying Matte was probably going to come to the 15". I was replying to kastenbrust saying it probably wasn't.

I did watch the keynote. I did not see anything that would suggest that Matte wouldn't be re-introduced to the 15" later on. Any quotes?

There is no reason why Apple would not introduce the matte on the 15" unless it makes it significantly weaker structurally. Glass is strong and stiff.

iI am glad people have these options.

Matte, ship 25/02.
After waiting on the 17" for the little larger screen, I do not know, but yes, there is a good chance that I would go with a 15.4" matte, if I had the option.
If Apple would come with a 15.4" matte option, it would make a group of buyers alittle unhappy, cause some, like me, would probably have bought the 15.4" then, rather then wait for the 17" with matte option. My bet is that the chances of a matte option on the 15.4" are very low.
My point being that if it was to be the case, then Apple might have added this option along with the 17" launch.
Why not to do so would be to anger those, if any, unhappy glossy 15.4" buyers who would have prefered the matte, solution for the matte missing option on 15.4" would be a matte film cover.
So yes there is a matte option for the 15.4", but not from Apple.
Be happy about your 17" matte, and if you went for the 15.4" glossy, matte film cover is always an option of a kind.
