Hope you're doing better, Uber.

Sounds like Uber should start her own thread. Anyway, it sounds like you're doing better, Uber, from the looks of your posts. I'm sure a lot of people are glad.

Hope you take care of yourself. Hope you stay strong and happy.

:D

Then again, if you're feeling too weak to lug that 17" PB, I'm sure we would all volunteer to take turns taking that heavy burden off your shoulders.

:D

Chloe's doing fine Uber. She's got a little bit of jaundice, but that's getting better each day. I'm just trying to get back to normal, but doing it in two hour intervals! (time between feeds).

I'm glad all I'll need to do is plug the 17PB into the wall to charge it up, or else it would feel like we had twins!

PS - Another gratuitously doting dad photo from this morning is attached.

awww she's so adorable! well you're all welcome to come over to my place to borrow my 17" PB if you want.
My name is Jane but Uber's just fine.
I'm doing better right now...just very tired b/c of chemo.
This post should really be renamed ;)

not doing good...just tripped and fell into the pool

Swimming in February? Ah...the joys of California.....er...or is it an indoor pool?

Here in the U.P., we do more icefishing than swimming...actually, icefishing should actually be called 'ice-drinking'. Basically it's just a tailgating party on a frozen lake. Sometimes they even catch fish.

outdoor pool. very very nice.
i didn't have the powerbook with me at the time *phew*. i needed to grab the power adapter and instead i fell in. It wasn't that bad...it was just very very cold.

cold as in i was shivering on the way up to my room. Not *that* cold. Just a little colder than i like. I just saw something at the bottom of the pool and now that i look for it i can't find my cell phone :p

Very cute baby, Chuck. Congratulations...

My younger brother and his wife had a kid a few months back. It's absolutely amazing how tiny and cute those little people are. I mean, how in the world do those cute little hands and feet become adult in so short of a time?

I am truly amazed. Hope everyone is doing well.

RE: Uber's cellphone
It's mind boggling how smart and how hip these younger generations are. Man. When I was in high school (many, many, many moons ago) the only thing on the market were those big brick-sized phones. Remember those? They cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. And now? We go disposable ones.

Wow. It boggles the mind. Okay, I'm feeling old now... I got to go take my nap...

:D

My cell phone ain't disposable. It was a Sony Ericsson T68i-the Bluetooth enabled cell phone that Steve kinda likes.
I think it is in the pool. Yikes.

Sorry, Uber, I wasn't talking about your cellphone...

I was talking about how now they do have disposable cellphones with the wiring written on disposable fabric. It hasn't hit the market yet, but they've been talking about it for the last two years in the media.

Hope all is well with you.

ah those cell phones.
I like the idea...but they can't receive incoming calls
All is sort of well.
in your sig you forgot FCP and the like.

sorry to be so blatantly down to earth (just talking about computers here ;) ), but why is apple only using mediocre graphics cards in their laptops ? I mean, if I dish out over 3K for a 17 powerbook, I can probably afford an extra coupe hundred for a nice nvidia quadro solution that actually lets me run MAYA and other 3D apps at a decent speed...

The 17" could become THE mobile 3D workstation of choice for a whole industry ! Currently there is pretty much only the Dell M50 and Fujitsu Celsius in that market, both costing more than the 17" (and of course look like cr@p). Oh lord, don't make me buy a Dell...:(

have you heard of any laptop with a workstation-quality graphics card? the quadro is nice...but too big to put into something like the 17" AluBook. I wish you could though :)

Just a quick question to those out there who already have, or who have seen the 17". How big does this thing feel? Is it a real portable or is it a 'stays on the desktop' type laptop?

I'm planning on making this my first real apple purchase (other than the iPod that is :) ) begun saving up already

ok, ok, I should have said MOBILE workstation quality :D
The M50 has the Quadro4 700 go, but it even beats some 'desktop workstations' out there... http://www.spec.org/gpc/opc.data/vp7/summary.html

You are probably right about the thickness, though. Let the Apple magic come in...:p

Zaid-

For me it's the difference between being stuck behind a 70lb monitor in my office or having a laptop so I could work out on a nice day or in the livingroom while the TV is on. The weight is the same or less than my old Pismo laptop.

I think it's more of a "movable" computer, rather than a "portable". :)

I have seen two in person. The weight may not be a big deal (it's the same as my Pismo with two batteries), but the sheer size of it will be. It could be cumbersome to some people (including me).

I use my laptop 8 hours a day at work on an iCurve stand. I then take it home, and use it on my lap, on my kitchen table, on a desk in the office, or in bed. In that respect, I really just move the computer from place to place. I don't need the most portable machine. I need the most screen real estate.

For for most people, the 12" might be too small and the 17" might be too big. The old and possible new 15" could be just right. If you want the most portability, get the 12". If you want a mix of portability and screen resolution, get the 15". If you want the most screen, get the 17".

I think that I would probably want a movable one rather than true portable. I wouldn't be using it on the go as such, rather I'd just like it to go with me, easily. So from what you say the 17" should be fine.

Anyway just a bit of initial opinion gathering as I'll have probably only have saved up for it around August. :)

Thanks for the help. :)

the 17" powerbook totally made windows users switch. It's very very portable and when me and some of my friends compared laptops...the screen was soo much bigger, none of the laptops had 802.11b (forget about 802.11g and bluetooth!), and the fact that you're using an Apple laptop was totally unbeatable.

I use it every day to code and to play with.

Ubergeek,
do you think that it would be ideal for video editing? of course i would get 1gb ram and and external 120gb fire wire hd...and what about the money, is it really worth that much?

Hey it's your choice...i give up! everyone's gonna call me ubergeek from now on.

Ideal for everything. Except for throwing into the swimming pool ;)
