You dropped it inside the truck and it got a dent?
I drive the old mail trucks with the steering wheel on the right side, and the floor near the door is metal. My phone fell out of my pocket while I was getting up. It wasn’t deep enough in my pocket.

It seems that the current gen Pro series were designed much more on improving thermal dynamics and incorporating materials and improved cooling technology in favor of having a proven durable outer shell/frame ensuring long term cosmetic condition.

As much as I would love seeing my devices in “naked” use instead of using a case for them, the current Pro series iPhones will need a case applied to them if you really want to keep them looking nice while using them. YMMV.
It’s a small dent. Surprisingly I thought it would sustain more damage since it fell out of my pocket onto the metal part of the floor of my work truck.

It looks and feels better.

I pulled the trigger and got the 17 Pro in silver, will see how it goes.
Besides the very small dent on my phone it looks flawless. I still use it caseless, I’m just even more careful now and just use a bumper now when I’m at work. At home and out and about I’m caseless.

This is one guy out of millions who own this phone. Mine is always in my front pocket and I wear skinny jeans with absolutely no damage.
The reason I asked here is because I automatically discard opinions of youtube parasites and their clickbait crud.

As much money as these devices now cost, the last thing I want is a device that easily gets scratches and/or dents on the frame as you now have with the current gen Pro series iPhone.

I get it why people want to go caseless on their iPhones and if they cost in the $500 range I too would probably be using my iPhones caseless. I put a nice leather case and matte screen protector on my iPhones.

I got a Spigen Enzo case and a privacy screen protector with the phone as part of a promo which the shop was running. The sales guy applied the screen protector, I took it off as soon as I got home as it was seriously degrading the screen quality.

The case made the phone feel like a plastic tank, it is revolting. It feels so good in hand without it, much nicer than the 16 Pro.

I get how most cases ruin the look and feel of having a nice looking iPhone and why there are people who prefer running with "naked" phones as a result. For me it was more a matter of protecting my investment of having to buy a Deep Blue 1TB 17 Pro and knowing this color is more prone to show imperfections of daily use so I got the Tekmomo Sophie Blue MagSafe leather case to go with my Deep Blue 17 Pro. Yes my iPhone is now cased however the blue leather looks and feels nice in my hands when I do use my 17 Pro.

This week I have been using my Blue Titanium 1TB 15 Pro as my daily and I have a Dark Blue Decoded leather MagSafe case on it. I used to use the much thinner carbon fiber cases on my iPhones but I now prefer the look and feel of leather. I don't feel having these leather cases take away from my iPhone experience and know I am protecting the finish of my iPhone which is much more important to me than risking running "naked" with them.

I took off the screen protector because it was messing up the auto-brightness when the light hits the screen at certain angles, and with the extra scratch resistance and anti-glare, it’s been a better experience without it.

Use it case-less most of the time since the curved edges don’t hurt my pinky like my 13P did, and it has better heat dissipation when charging with the 96W MBP adapter. Only go with the case when I’ll be taking a lot of pics and need that extra grip.

Some people are buying expensive cases and protectors when they could just buy AC+ instead. Cheaper ones though are not a bad investment.

At this point I would hold off on getting a new iPhone until the new 18 series comes out. To be perfectly honest, I think the 16 Pro/Pro Max is a better iPhone right now.
I think based on OP's post you might be right for him. It really just depends on if you prioritize the titanium frame and the durability/aesthetic benefits that come along with it or if you prioritize the aluminum frame and the cooling benefits that come along with it (accompanied with the vapor chamber and the other upgrades the 17 has over the 16).

I personally think the 17 is a much better phone, but I keep my phone in a case always and don't miss the titanium at all.

I agree that the 17 Pro is a much better iPhone compared to previous generations. When I do take out my Deep Blue 17 Pro I do enjoy using it and share daily driver duties with my Alpine Green 1TB 13 Pro, my Space Black 1TB Air and Blue Titanium 1TB 15 Pro iPhones so I rotate between four iPhones when using them as a daily. I like having options when using my iPhones. 😁

Looking to upgrade my 16 Pro to 17 Pro, primarily due to the fact that I have a 128GB unit which is feeling a bit cramped. I also like the cameras, screen and general hand feel of my wife's 17 Pro - the slightly thicker frame makes it much nicer to hold than the 16 Pro.

I am concerned about the durability - I don't use a case, and although I am not clumsy I've had an off occasion where the phone slips out of my pocket. The 16 Pro takes this in its stride, with no marks on the frame, or cracks on the screen or back. I know that the glass of the 17 Pro is even more durable, but I remember the initial hysteria about the frames denting very easily.

Now that the phone has been in the hands of users for a while, how much of a problem is this, for caseless users?
The 17 Pros are extremely durable. I have been using my 17 PM caseless and abusing it as usual, no issues. I did the same with the 14, 15 and the 16. Cases are flat silly IMO.

There is no ongoing problem with the durability of the 17 Pro. As long as you don't drop it or bang it hard against a hard object, you should be fine.
I routinely drop mine and bang it against hard objects without any problems. The only damage I have managed to do to iPhone Pros in the last few caseless years was when I dropped one 15 feet to concrete and it cracked the back glass.

Good to hear. Caseless and a few low-height drops on indoor surfaces without dents?

Skip the 17 pro max, i know 3 coworkers who run caselss and first corner drop the entire frame is deformed.

This is the reality of the 5080 alimimum they used and im 100% certain they will be using a harder aluminium for the 18. Just go look at the subreddit, tons of people showing the physical frame where the metal is the thinnest completely deforming, or worse is a completely bent phone, or antenna lines cracking.

First drops destory the thing, and this is commonly shared. Go ask any ai chatbot will also agree with what im saying due to widespread reports on it. The AIR / 16 PRO Max is a better product, and if you dont upgrade yearly skip the 17 pro / max 5080 Al version and wait for a harder material.

Theres a reason this device is the most returned iphone ever; dont pay a premium for a lesser product.

I don't recall, but was durability an issue for the 6s phones back in the day? Are they using different aluminum on the 17 pro series?

Not only do you have “scratchgate” on the current Pro series iPhone but it seems “bendgate” also applies here. People were worrying about the Air bending easily but it seems to me you have to be much more careful if you have the current Pro series if you want to keep them in excellent condition.

I have had my Air since launch day and it still looks just as pristine as the first day I got it. Personally from my use case, I haven’t experienced the issues reported regarding the “compromises” that the Air has. I have enjoyed using mine so far.

I skipped the 17 Pro Max, but got the 17 Pro 😛

I had the Air, it’s not good enough for my use case, but it’s nice. I’ll see how the 17 Pro fares, AC+ is there for the worst case scenario and I’ll not hesitate to use it repeatedly if it turns out that Apple cheaped out on the materials at the cost of durability.

16 Pro stays in the drawer for backup. The 17 Pro is really great though, the battery, screen and selfie cam evolution is significant, as is the app persistence due to 12GB of RAM.

Some additional issues, the plastic antenna lines are also failing on peoples units. Many people complaining that this happened when taking a case off, or that i was in a case.

The 17 pro max is a problematic product and should be avoided wait for the 18 for refinements or hold off unitl they fix all the engineering issues - not worth the ultra premium pricing.
