By growing some muscles. Come on, the 17" is like a 15.6 inch laptop in terms of size. Everybody whines about the size but in reality, just look at the Windows 17" laptops. Psh...

Well I mean, if it's what he prefers then more power to him. I've just used them in Apple stores/Best Buy and they feel huge to me.

I don't think Apple will discontinue the 17". I would suggest that they don't anyway.

17" is like the REAL pro version right now due to the express card slot. Its target users are the more pro end who can spend the money. So these users are more likely to be the influencers that will tell their friends how good Apple is. Or people who see these 'pros' using Apple will be influenced by them.

Somethings aren't just about sales volume or direct profit. A lot is about the influence that the users have.

The unthinkable happened. So what now?

I -NEED- this kind of resolution, and I -NEED- Mac OS X. The answer? I can't be mobile.

This is a step backwards for Apple. We may be 2%, but we're 2% that pay a hell of a lot of money on a very regular basis to Apple.

2nd'd on the 15" being fine for productivity, especially with the hi-res screens. Interesting to see the hate towards them, but I guess it's essentially a thread for 17" owners haha

Well, uhm.

Hypothetically, imagine that I wanted to look at a frame of 1080p video, and I wanted it to be clear, easy to see, and not blurred by pixel scaling.

My options are now the MBPR, with a glossy display, and tiny tiny little pixels that I can't see, or a PC. Because Apple is making no laptops other than the Retina that can display 1080p -- the highest resolution they sell otherwise is 1050.

I don't consider "can't view a single frame of video" to be "fine for productivity". Not that this requires a 17" display; I have a 15" laptop with a 1080p display.

How do you use that tank of a laptop for casual browsing in the recliner etc?

Same way I would any other laptop. It's maybe at most an inch wider than the 15". It's not really that different.

What about a Retina Macbook Pro?

That should do to your couch/bed/etc.. working style.

The only resolutions at which it isn't blurring pixels are 1440x900 and 2880x1800. The former is way too small, the latter is too large and has tiny tiny pixels. The resolutions between them are all made by blurring pixels into other pixels. Also glossy. Also lacks ports I still rely on.

It's a nice MacBook. It's not a MacBook Pro in any meaningful sense.

What are you going to do?

I myself do not really want to go back to Windows, but not sure what other option I have. (We have rid our home of Windows PC's currently, don't really want to re-infest it.)

I have/had a 15" MBP and it was too small for me, I gave it to my mom.

Non-17" users: Don't give me the whole us an ext. monitor garbage.
I actually have a 27" iMac, but I prefer to use my laptop to work, from bed, recliner, couch, backyard, so i have no plans of setting an ext. monitor on my lap.

Fact is 1900x1200 is the minimum resolution I can stand and on a 15" it would be microscopic to actually work with. It's even a little small on the 17" for my tastes, but I can deal with it.

Anyway like to hear from fellow 17" users what they are planning if Apple really does do the stupid thing and kill off the 17".

KUDOS !
Just wanted to add to 17"mbp solidarity yo.........

I am still a very happy, creative and productive PRO musician/producer on the early 17" 2007 mbp, it still runs like I just opened the box!

Just have to clean out the fans cos they run all the time, the superdrive doesn't play very well, burns like a charm still but I have an external too. Life is good with this huge powerhouse laptop.

I carry it everywhere for mobile recording needs, to meetings and auditions, on the plane (first class) cos I make room to use my 17" mbp.

People want their machines to do everything for them, people don't modify their lives around the machines (period). I have better arm strength and walking around with a tiny more weight on me is good for my cardiovascular system (says my trainer). It isn't even that heavy common (laughing).

I wanted a pro laptop and Apple was the only one offering it, the 17" was always advertised as their PRO of the Pros.

Now they are making the 15" the standard PRO. I gave it a shot, my friends helped buy it for me to try and I returned that 15 rmbp because it didn't feel like I was on a pro machine, with my 17"mbp next to it, I felt the 15" rmpb was a great gadget with its oooh la la screen. Watching Gladiator and Princess Mononoke on both, I continue to enjoy far more on my 17" matte screen mbp in the dark and out in the park in the brightest summer sunshine!

Doesn't run nearly as hot as the 15"rmbp when I multi-task or watch movies on my lap.

The 15"rmbp was great for me to show off, cos I do have that about me still I never out grew that since childhood, cos I was always poor, when I got something EVERYONE considered as cool, I felt pride and was a total show-off. But I actually feel I get a lot of work done on the 17" mbp. I have recorded / mastered and released over 7 solo albums since owning this beast and 4 more on the way.

I am still saving up for the refurb late 2011 17"mbp and with the refunded money from the 15" rmbp I can put some into savings/investments as well as put towards upgrading the ram and putting in an SSD for the 17" refurb.

17" mbp All the WAY baby. I LOVE it so much. *KISSES her!*

It's not really stupid for apple, I mean it only accounts for >2% of their laptop sales.

There is a lot going around about the stats of 17"mbp sales.

My theory is that there actually are that few of us PRO users out there. Most people buy Apple for the 'look of it' common don't make excuses or justifications, admit it. We all love the Apple products for their design, you SHOULD, its a trail blazer and extremely sexy ;)

The number of sales of the 17"mbp only reflects how many PRO users there are and how many of us STICK to our 17"mbps because they are so amazing, durable and stands the test of time / trends, so we're not always buying more of them, besides - APPLE CARE is incredible.

The most that the number of sales represents are the number of new machines replacing rotten ones, those users who return the 17" for a brand new one because APPLE couldn't do anything about the one before. Or those of us who returned the 17" to upgrade to the MAC PRO.

Simple math and logic.

Its all the kids and trendy people going with the herd who are buying up most of the 13 - 15" machines cos they are affordable within reason and the demographic are mostly uni-students or moms anyways, people who have all kinds of mobile devices all over on them (laughs). People on the GO vs people who are PRO - that simple.

MBP 17" all the way baby cos I be PRO yo.
