Welcome beers to the Two|One Contest #2

Yes, you read it right, it's geek theme time.

Render a photograph in respect to a film, tv series, actor, character, scene, situation, location, one-liner, film prop, goof, anything that inspires you in that regard. Go wild, go berserk, go TV/Movie Extravaganza

--
Submissions end 28MAY2014|06:14PM Forum Time (S/28MAY)
Voting ends 04JUN2014|06:14PM Forum Time (V/04JUN)

--

Two|One is an attempt at having a longer, parallel photography contest in which submissions are explicitly generated for the given subject and run in 21-day cycles. Two, one... are also the numbers you mutter prior to releasing your shutter in a controlled environment setting.

Contest rules

-One photo only per contestant.
-Submitted image is limited to original work that has not been formerly displayed in the forums.
-Winners are chosen by forum user votes.
-1st place winner sets new contest theme within 72 hours.
-Behind the scenes shots requirement under discussion in previous thread
-Photos are to be prepared and submitted within a 14 day period. Thread manager closes the contest on the 14th day and voting begins.
-Do not cast votes before that specific point in time. Forum users have 7 days to cast their votes. Vote responsibly, ideally one vote per forum user on one submission. Votes are counted upon completion of the 21-day cycle. Please respect this in order to have a fair outcome.

You are highly encouraged to experiment with lighting, materials, weird combinations, crops, props and stops, post production, workarounds and DIYs. Scout for indoor and outdoor locations, ask friends, spouses and lovers to model, put make-up on them, choose a wardrobe and wig, but keep it relevant to the subject matter.

I've decided to add a prize to this contest (for the next 10 contests to be precise).

Each contest's 1st place winner will be receiving a 2$ (or equivalent) via app store app gift or paypal. Winner will inform me of the app they want (or cash) and their email so I can send it. Via pm for privacy issues.

This is a cost I will be solely responsible for, irrelevant of each week's winner.

Just to keep the inspiration juice flowing

--edit
if I win any subsequent first place, I will be giving the prize to the 2nd place

Great idea for a contest. I'm a big film and TV geek so my brain just went into overload.....

Alice in Wonderland.

I'm glad I wasn't late this time, 2 weeks was a tight window to set up this type of shoot.

Oh dear

I left this until the last minute - and I think it shows. At least it'll help to flesh out the contest

Cast your vote now and choose your winner!

Good luck!

Ok Dopeheads, quite a turnout this time, with some allergic to kryptonite, several force geeks, a couple of pulp fictionites, and a fairy taler.

You all have made this thread flourish with creativity and I thank you!

so the winners are:

3rd place : Oracle1729/MCH-1138 - 4 votes
2nd place : Apple fanboy - 5 votes

Ladies & Gentlemen, I give you this contest's 1st place winner : MacRy - by a landslide of 12 votes (queue Oscars theme)

MacRy, please state you app of choice and send me via pm your email so I can send it to you.

Awaiting impatiently for the next theme.

Congrats, MacRy, and nice work, everyone!

Behind the scenes on the set from my photo...

Behind the Scenes by MCH-1138, on Flickr

And behind the scenes on making the photo…

BTS-1.jpg shows the lighting setup:

  1. White foam core backdrop.
  2. SB-800 (snooted at 1/32 or 1/16 power) to illuminate the water vapor.
  3. Humidifier to create the water vapor.
  4. SB-700 (at 1/16 power) with 3 blue gels (2x Roscoe #3202 Full Blue and 1x Roscoe #80 Primary Blue) to illuminate the backdrop.
  5. SB-600 (at 1/16 power) with red gel (1x Roscoe #26 Light Red), shooting under the set into a sheet of white paper to provide the lighting on the steps.
  6. The set.
BTS-2.jpg shows the lighting and edits to the image:
  1. Basic photo of the set.
  2. As shot, with the lighting and the water vapor. Includes basic, minor adjustments (curves, sharpening, etc.).
  3. Cropped and cleaned up (cloned out light leaks between bricks, dust spot, etc.). This version was then exported to Pixelmator to add the lightsaber effects.
  4. Final version.
Looking forward to the next one...

Thanks for the votes everyone. I really enjoyed this contest as I'm a huge film buff and had loads of ideas for it. I felt sure that MCH would win this one as I loved his Lego Star Wars shot. Brilliantly executed and what great behind the scenes shots.

Congrats to everyone for some wonderful shots.

I'm afraid I don't have any behind the scenes shots for mine as it didn't take much in the way of staging. I bent and burned the spoon, mixed up a batch of Worcester sauce, water and coffee grounds, rubbed a muddy boot over the notepad and then staged it on my sink's draining board. It was shot with natural light and edited in Lightroom.

Here are a couple of shots that I considered using instead.

Hopefully everyone got the fact that it was a reference to the film Trainspotting. Link definitely NSFW.

As I don't have an app need in mind I'd like the prize money to roll over to the next competition if that's ok. I'll have one up and running at some point today.
