I'd like to say thanks for the votes I got. I put shamefully little effort into this and entered mainly to give my support to the contest which I really hope will flourish.

Behind the scenes on the set from my photo...

Incredible amount of effort you put in there - great entry and I love the 'behind the scenes' pictures of the Lego 'crew'.

I bent and burned the spoon, mixed up a batch of Worcester sauce, water and coffee grounds, rubbed a muddy boot over the notepad and then staged it on my sink's draining board.

I was wondering what the 'tabletop' was that you set up on - it never occurred to me that it was a draining board. Great photo - very grim and atmospheric, and a worthy winner.

Thanks PP.

Sums up my kitchen perfectly actually "Grim and atmospheric" ;)

Fine, I'll start with this ****** composite I couldn't quite get right for whatever reason.

Alice in Wonderland.

I'm glad I wasn't late this time, 2 weeks was a tight window to set up this type of shoot.

I love the fact that you two took the wardrobe aspect seriously!!

Congrats, MacRy, and nice work, everyone!

And behind the scenes on making the photo…

BTS-1.jpg shows the lighting setup:

  1. White foam core backdrop.
  2. SB-800 (snooted at 1/32 or 1/16 power) to illuminate the water vapor.
  3. Humidifier to create the water vapor.
  4. SB-700 (at 1/16 power) with 3 blue gels (2x Roscoe #3202 Full Blue and 1x Roscoe #80 Primary Blue) to illuminate the backdrop.
  5. SB-600 (at 1/16 power) with red gel (1x Roscoe #26 Light Red), shooting under the set into a sheet of white paper to provide the lighting on the steps.
  6. The set.
BTS-2.jpg shows the lighting and edits to the image:
  1. Basic photo of the set.
  2. As shot, with the lighting and the water vapor. Includes basic, minor adjustments (curves, sharpening, etc.).
  3. Cropped and cleaned up (cloned out light leaks between bricks, dust spot, etc.). This version was then exported to Pixelmator to add the lightsaber effects.
  4. Final version.
Looking forward to the next one...

Amazing set, far more intricate and complicated shot than it appears at first glance and...

Behind the Scenes Level : Master !!

Stunning

Thanks for the votes everyone. I really enjoyed this contest as I'm a huge film buff and had loads of ideas for it. I felt sure that MCH would win this one as I loved his Lego Star Wars shot. Brilliantly executed and what great behind the scenes shots.

Congrats to everyone for some wonderful shots.

I'm afraid I don't have any behind the scenes shots for mine as it didn't take much in the way of staging. I bent and burned the spoon, mixed up a batch of Worcester sauce, water and coffee grounds, rubbed a muddy boot over the notepad and then staged it on my sink's draining board. It was shot with natural light and edited in Lightroom.

Here are a couple of shots that I considered using instead.

Hopefully everyone got the fact that it was a reference to the film Trainspotting. Link definitely NSFW.

As I don't have an app need in mind I'd like the prize money to roll over to the next competition if that's ok. I'll have one up and running at some point today.

Congrats again MacRy, indeed a shot easily pulled right out of the movie, nice art direction!

Rollover amount added to the next one. If everybody keeps it up by the end of the 11th Two|One, some lucky sod might leave here with a $20 app..!

To the next one.. oh wait, it's already here

funny thing, too many star wars fan in here

that's not bad photoshop work

I left this until the last minute - and I think it shows. At least it'll help to flesh out the contest

Voted!

Since posting to Flickr I’ve been told that this shot has quite a pulp fiction feel to it!

Thanks, all, for the kind words. Great topic and strong entries by everyone made it a lot of fun.

For me, the most complicated part of my shot was lighting the water vapor so it would show against the background without throwing a bunch of highlights onto the silhouetted set.

Congrats again, MacRy, and timely choice of topics for the next one. Hope to see everyone there!

So my back ground shots are no where near as interesting as some. Basically the first picture is the original shot at comic con.
The second was my first idea of just cutting out the background in LR (that took ages with just a magic mouse.
I wasn't happy overall so remembered picture number 3 of the demolition of our local laser quest arena.
Last cut out and layering was achieved in OnOne Perfect Photo Suite 7.5.
More creative editing than shooting, but well done to the everybody for their great efforts, and for Needfx for giving us a creative push.

Lastly imagine my surprise when I came across this news article on preview a couple of days after posting. When I first saw the thumbnail I thought someone had lifted my Stormtroopers from my shot!

I couldn't resist reiterating the fact that your setup and final composition is absolutely superb (behind the scenes too of course!)

Thanks -- glad it was recognizable! I was originally using the shot just before that one (with Vader standing alone) as inspiration, but this one seemed a little more interesting.
