Yosemite looks great!

For all the Naysayers...

... I think Yosemite's new design is a breath of fresh air and it looks great. The GUI optimises space and gets rid of a lot of space wasting eye candy.

And for those needing reading glasses and not always wearing them: The new fonts seem to give a much crispier reading experience making it a lot easier to read them without putting on glasses!

This is my 2 cents worth!
 
I also like the new look and that Apple has finally gotten past the whole 3D-effects craze that has been gripping the 2D desktop environment world over the last decade. Probably the most useless addition they've ever made to OSX is the 3D reflective dock which added zero functionality and just needlessly consumed CPU cycles and battery.

However I suspect the naysayers will fill up this thread with their usual "I think this and because I think it I'm right and you should shut up" that you always get whenever Apple changes something.

Mind you, Apple going awry with their UI design isn't something that I've come to think overnight, I think things started to go wrong already with 10.5 (which I like to think of as Apple's Vista).
 
Opinion varies to be sure, but for me at the moment, I'm not jazzed up by the look. Granted I'm not running with Yosemite so I only see the screen shots occasionally.

I hate the Finder icon, I really think they destroyed a great icon tying the legacy OS to OS X - it looks goofy imo. Some of the other icons do like really nice but its too cartoony almost. I'm not against the flat design, I like it on my windows 8 boot camp install. I just don't like Apple's implementation.
 
I love the GUI updates too, I'm a fan of translucency and dark mode is exactly what I've wanted for years. I'm not so keen on the icons, but it shouldn't be too hard to replace them with something less saturated with colour, especially once the OS has been out for a little while and icon packs are made.
 
I love the new look now that the font issues have been ironed out. It will take you all of two days to not even notice the new look anymore. The only time it slightly bothers me is scrolling up black background web pages in safari. But heck, if that subtle transparency bothers you, you can turn it off. Plus you get the dark mode for those that wanted that.
 
I'm actually a Graphic/Web Designer (as well as Photographer) and the new design, to me, is awesome.

I seriously cannot wait for the Public Beta to install and play with. It's amazing how blah the old design looks compared to it. Very dull, seems 2002'ish.

When glancing over the screen shot thread, all I can picture in my mind is friends over who have no familiarity with Apple OSX or computers asking me what that awesome layout is.
 
I personally think it's about half half. The new system font, I don't mind so much. Folder and Finder icons are what bother me the most, as well as the weirdly divided forward and backward buttons. However, several icons has been nicely redone. I hope Apple will implement feedback on icons and UI features as the public launch nears.
 
The new look is indeed great. Better, in some areas so much better, in just about every way. Especially on a retina screen (that's what I'm using the beta on, so take that as a caveat, but how else could Apple design a refresh?).

For those who are skeptical and just looking at screenshots, hold off until you get to use it full-time. It takes a moment to adjust, then it clicks very nicely, and it's pretty hard to go back.

If there's, like, one or a handful of icons you don't like... c'mon. Yosemite offers enhanced, supported extensibility and (I expect) will be much more open to third-party customization. If your complaint has any support whatsoever, there will be tweaks and alternatives.
 
I think the new OS X looks great too except for one thing: I really, really, really, really, really, really, YES REALLY, dislike the separated back/forward buttons everywhere. They SUCK! :mad:

Gotta go against the grain as well and say I really, really like the look of Yosemite! :D

Kind of miss the cat names though. :eek:
 
I'll file a report to Apple about diminishing the contrast of Dark Mode.

It's a nice feature, but reminds me too many times of Pixelmator's problems with contrast. It's not as bad - don't get me wrong - but it still hurts my eyes.

What they need is a dark gray background with light gray text on it. Like every other Pro App they have ever done in their last 10 years.
 
As for someone like me, who did not really like the design of iOS 7/8, I must say that while Yosemite definitely takes design cues from the new iOS design language, it looks way more polished and refined than its mobile counterpart. I was worried about how Yosemite would turn out, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that Apple took their time with refreshing the OS X UI (compared to the rushed development of iOS 7). I feel that Yosemite's icons are much better designed and aesthetically pleasing compared to the iOS icons. I'm glad Yosemite decided to have buttons actually be displayed as buttons instead of colored plain text. The translucency is much better handled in OS X and I like that Apple still uses drop shadows for depth without going overboard. Also, the blinding white spaces of many stock iOS apps didn't appear in Yosemite, so it seems that Apple is listening and hopefully the dark theme will be expanded and ported to iOS in the future as well.

The design of Yosemite is essentially Jony Ive UI design 2.0 and I would personally love to see the design of Yosemite carry over into future iOS updates.

"Like Pixelmator" is a powerful comparison. I hope they fix that in Yosemite because I find the Pixelmator interface far too dark (although the heal tool makes my struggles worthwhile).

i hadn't even noticed that so it can't be that much of a big deal. Why is it an issue??

If all I wanted was feel, I'd use a linux machine for everything. Hands down, it smokes everything else for strictly functional considerations. I bought a macbook pro, went out and spent my hard earned money for the "LOOK and feel" that is APPLE's OSX. it is so much more attractive than any other OS out there. But that will soon be all gone. IOS 7 is totally horrendous. It has literally made me want to change phones. Yosemite is making me want to change notebooks. I HATE that flat, pastel, crap. Don't they realize that a huge part of their success is the beauty of their OS? What if Ferrari made a mini van? Mini van's have a great purpose and can do a lot of things a sports car can't but half the fun of driving a sports car is the look. The rest is feel. Mavericks is beautiful. It has depth, color, texture. Yosemite is a whitewashed, pastel, disaster.

Doubt it, considering no iOS iOS 7 icons changed in iOS 8. My guess is Apple's public beta is meant for feedback on functionality, bugs, etc. not do you like the look of this icon or the color of this folder. Perhaps if they get enough negative feedback on something it might change but I'd say the chances of that are slim. I don't get get the big deal over the new finder icon. Doesn't even look that different to me.

Probably more of a personal preference. Honestly I'd prefer if it was one button with a gray line separating forward and back rather than two separate button shapes. Of course this is v 1.0 of the new design, I'm sure it will get refined over time. I also expect some of Yosemite design language to make its way to iOS 9. My guess is iOS 8 was about new features/api's and there was not much time for UI changes.

What do you mean the font issues have been ironed out? Did they finally make it smoother and easier to read?
