A 5k top of the line retina display, being powered by a... mid-range laptop GPU?![]()
Well there goes my money; I'll stick with my existing iMac thanks.
No one is going to buy this iMac except the uninformed and stupid.
Apple going with this GPU with this display is the biggest mistake they've ever made.

Consider me uninformed and stupid. Ordered one. Looks like I can use my 32GB RAM from my late 2012 iMac. Sweet!

cannot agree more
its total dissaster
at least for me
i had such a great expectation thinking it will get nvidia 980m(which is a perfect fit and first mobile chip that is as powerful as desktop)
why apple why ?????? Image
Unless I'm missing something, can the eye even really see 5k?
I couldn't agree more, a 980M would have made the perfect iMac in every respect, an absolute classic machine which would have been regarded as a benchmark for the iMac hierachy.
i guess money talks louder than sanity at Apple Towers...
Does anybody have any idea about which card are strongest, i do a lot lot photoshopping and some gaming, and i saw a test of some games on the 680M, and all the games ran perfect in 2560* but will the M295X be able to do the same. ??
The Radeon M295X 4GB is the unreleased full Tonga XT chip. The cutdown version of Tonga is the desktop Radeon HD 285.
M295X should as fast or faster than the 980M.

If you think that m290x is a mid-range laptop GPU, then I don't really know what to say...This is one of the fastest laptop GPUs available in 2014. And if my integrated HD4000 is effortlessly able to draw a 3840x2400 desktop, I doubt that the m290x would have much trouble with 5120x2880
Don't get me wrong, I am quite surprised why Apple didn't go with the Nvidia Maxwell... time will tell, I guess.
No way will it be as fast as the 980m, more like around the performance of the 880m, which in itself is more or less the same as the existing 780m in the non retina 27".
dude its not even close to it
290x is less powerful then 780m(which we have on current gen)
so 295x will be same or a very little bit more but not even close to 980m
you might want to read this before saying anything
especially this part "he M290X performs a bit below the GeForce GTX 780M and slightly above the Nvidia GeForce GTX 680M."
