This is the 25th edition of my semi-annual analysis of the MacRumors Top 50 Posters. Although MacRumors switched from the vBulletin forum software to the XenForo forum software in June 2015, I found ways to gather most of the same information I've collected in the past.

Previous "Top 50 Posters Extrapolated" threads:
2003 (July); 2004 (January, July); 2005 (January, July); 2006 (January, July); 2007 (January, July); 2008 (January, July); 2009 (January, July); 2010 (January, July); 2011 (January, July); 2012 (January, July); 2013 (January, July); 2014 (January, July); 2015 (January)
The legend of column headings follows each chart. Measurements were taken yesterday (July 3, 2015).

Columns:
  1. Rank = Position in order by post count, 1 (highest) to 50.
  2. Current Top 50 = members with the 50 currently highest post counts.
  3. Cur Posts = # of posts by that member.
  4. Cur Rate = average # posts per day by that member over the last 6 months.
  5. Prev Rank = previous rank, as of 6 months ago (January 2015), or "---" for those who are new to the Top 50.
  6. Delta Rank = change in rank, i.e., # of slots +higher or -lower in rank since 6 months ago.

Observations
  1. GGJstudios has about a month left as the only forum member with more than 40,000 posts, because maflynn is on track to pass that milestone in a matter of weeks.

  2. Six months ago the projection showed that C DM and ucfgrad93 would be the only members to join the Top 50 by this month. That proved to be true for C DM, now at #37, but ucfgrad93 didn't make the list, and would be #53 if the list was longer.

  3. Sun Baked is off of the Top 50 list for the first time in the 12 years I've been tracking posts. C DM's arrival finally bumped Sun Baked to what would be #52 on a longer list.

  4. The projection last time had the Top 20 users in the correct slots, except for SandboxGeneral, who took a break from the forums and ended up as #21 instead of the predicted #12. Of course, we could claim that the digits 1 and 2 were correct, just in the wrong order!

  5. No user crossed the threshold to 20,000+ posts or to 30,000+ posts. Dejo was the only user to pass 15,000 posts in the last 6 months.

  6. 76% of the Top 50 were active users in the last 6 months.

  7. Three users had the biggest overall increase in position: 5 slots. They were MRU, up from #32 to #27, Intell, up from #34 to #29, and Weaselboy, up from #38 to #33. Next were SandboxGeneral and dejo, each up 4 slots.

  8. The biggest drop was 3 slots, a tie between MacDawg and dukebound85. They both made about 100 posts in the last 6 months, but that wasn't enough to retain their slots in the Top 50.

  9. Most posts in 6 months: maflynn was the only user to make over 4,000 posts (4,242). C DM missed that mark only slightly (3,929 posts). The only other users to make over 2,000 posts in 6 months were Scepticalscribe (2,954 posts), Rogifan (2,742 posts), and JayLenochiniMac (2,534 posts).

  10. New stat! I don't think much of forum popularity contests, but at the risk of encourging such comparisons, I'll report a new statistic that was caught in my data net. There are seven Top 50 Posters with over 100 "likes": maflynn (452 likes), C DM (425 likes), rdowns (329 likes), SandboxGeneral (217 likes), MRU (133 likes), Doctor Q (120 likes), and MacNut (113 likes). XenForo offers a statistics page of its own, showing the top 20 overall "like" leaders.

 50 KnightWRX 15,043 48 -2
Columns:
  1. Proj Rank = Projected position in order by post count, 1 (highest) to 50.
  2. Projection Jan 4, 2016 = members with the 50 highest projected post counts based on current post count and rate for the last 6 months.
  3. Proj Posts = projected # of posts by that member.
  4. Cur Rank = current rank, as of July 2015 (see Chart #1 above), or "---" for those who are not in the current Top 50.
  5. Delta Rank = projected change in rank, i.e., # of slots +higher or -lower in rank over the next 6 months.

Observations
  • For the first-time ever, we have a tie! Surely and KnightWRX each have 15,043 posts, so they share slot #50, making this the first Top 50 with 51 members! Since Surely has been inactive since January 2013 and KnightWRX has been inactive since October of the same year, the tie will continue, although their Top 50 membership will be over next year.

  • A tidy cutoff point: those projected to have 20,000 or more posts made the Top 20. Those with 19,999 or fewer posts fill the remainign slots.

  • Projected to join the Top 50: samcraig, Rogifan, and ucfgrad93.

  • Projected to drop off the Top 50: r.j.s (missed by 123 posts) and jav6454 (missed by 167 posts).

  • According to these projections, the top 16 will remain as they are six months from now. Of the rest, only Intell and -aggie- will retain their positions.

  • Largest increases: C DM, up 20 slots and into the Top 20. Nobody else went up by double digits, but Weaselboy came close (up 9 slots) and MRU right behind (up 8 slots).

  • The inactive bot named MacBytes is not included, but would rank #43 right now and would be projected at #43 in 6 months.

  3. Weighted Rate = # posts per day by that member as a cascading weighted average, giving 50% weight to the most recent 6 months, 25% to the previous 6 months, 12.5% to the previous 6 months, and so on, with adjustments made based on the length of membership. See my definition of weighted rate.
  4. Cur Rank = current rank as of July 2015 (Chart 1), or "---" for those who are not in the current Top 50.
  5. Delta Rank = projected change in rank, i.e., # of slots +higher or -lower in rank from now until the end of time.
  6. Last EOT = rank in End of Time projections from 6 months ago (January 2015, Chart #3), or "---" for those who were not in the previous End of Time Top 50.
  7. Delta EOT = change in rank from End of Time projection 6 months ago to End of Time projection now.
These are the true "top posters" at MacRumors since they currently make the most posts over any given time period.

Observations

  1. #1 poster maflynn continues his double digit rate, as he has since I started tracking him in 2011.

  2. C DM's rate of qualifying posts/day has risen from 9.27 in July 2014 to 14.94 in January 2015 to 18.32 today, enough to move from End of Time #4 to End of Time #2.

  3. Newtons Apple wasn't previously on my radar, after joining 15.7 months ago in March 2014. The rate shown, 11.73, is based on 5,605 posts in 15.7 months. Only time will tell if Newtons Apple can keep up that pace.

  4. Also in the Top 20 and not previously on my radar is jrswizzle, who joined in August 2012. jrswizzle took 34.3 months to make 5,988 posts, a rate of 5.4 posts/day.

  5. Five members have retained the same End of Time position as on the January 2015 End of Time list: maflynn (#1), Altemose (#8), GGJstudios (#9), mattopotamus (#15 -- for the 3rd time in a row!), and Jessica Lares (#31).

  6. The EOT Top 50 was much more volatile over the past 6 months than in previous accountings. Last time, 10 new members joined the list. This time is was 17, including Michael Goff at #25 and yjchua95 at #30.

  7. The minimum post rate required for the End of Time Top 50 has increased from 2.4 posts/day to 2.78 posts/day.

  8. Biggest increase in rank within the End of Time rankings: JayLenochiniMac, up 38 slots from nearly the bottom of the list to the Top 10. Second place: Scepticalscribe, up 32 slots to #7.

  9. Biggest drop in rank within the End of Time rankings: IJ Reilly, down 19 slots, folowed by
lordofthereef, down 18, and Peace, down 17.

  10. Now that MacNut has dropped off the Top 50 End of Time, that leaves Chupa Chupa and IJ Reilly as the members with the longest membership (12.97 years). They both joined on July 16, 2002. Technically, IJ Reilly has the edge for joining at 6:49pm that day. Chupa Chupa joined 41 minutes later, at 7:30pm!

Just as amazingly, former Top 50 member scem0 joined the same day, at 7:05pm!

  11. Next in line for length of membership is Doctor Q at 12.79 years. He hasn't been on the Top 50 End of Time since the January 2013 rankings, but rumor has it that the forum conversion to XenForo has kept his post rate rather high in the last 6 months, upping his overall rate.

  12. Shortest forum membership on the Top 50 End of Time: Newtons Apple, a member for only 15.7 months.

  13. Members who just missed the End of Time Top 50, and their qualifying post rates: Oletros (2.76 posts/day), rhett7660 (2.74 posts/day), and annk (2.70 posts/day). annk is a forum administrator who puts in many volunteer hours each day serving forum members, but she manages to do so with very efficient posting.

  14. If we expanded the list to 100, arn would be #94.

Let's check on the post history of one user in particular, our top poster GGJstudios.

Well, as a fully fledged nerd, I find this sort of tabulation of data fascinating.

However, seeing your humble scribe appear as a part of that data, is also strangely interesting.

Meanwhile, grateful thanks to you, @Doctor Q , for your exemplary, sterling and trojan work preparing all of this for our perusal.

As I recall, you used to prepare a 'Top 50' of the various charts - which I, to my embarrassed fascination used to find extraordinarily interesting to read; is Xenforo the reason it is confined to 'Top 16' in the various categories, or is it that such a thing would require an astounding amount of work?

Thanks Q for putting this together as always. I'm glad to see my time hasn't been wasted over the last six months, and I've moved up one spot!
Maybe I'll scrap the top 10 one day.
I always find the post statistics fascinating though. I'm not sure where I would find the time to average 25 posts a day.

There are still 50 in each table, but they are in scrolling boxes. The [code] tags does that. Just scroll down to the see the full Top 50 in each post.

Thank you very much for your explanation; now, I can see it - I had assume that the Xenforo system had somehow insisted on those parameters, as, in previous periods, the table posted had included the full fifty names in each category.

Some years ago, around a year or two after I had joined MR, I remember reading a similar set of statistical data which had been published.

However, at the time another chart was published, which also - if memory serves - gave a percentage breakdown of how many individuals, - and what percentage of the total - comprised held each of the user titles.

At the time, I remember that I found it extraordinarily interesting.

Yes I remember that one. I bet Q could conjour up something like that on this new forum.

Pieces of pie for you to taste.

Users by Post Count - shows that 45% of users have never made a post, 22% have made only 1 post, and only 3% have made 30 or more posts. That means that 97% of users are Newbies.

users-by-post-count.png

Non-Newbie Users by Title - shows the distribution of the other user titles, particularly Member (up to 99 posts), Regular (up to 249 posts), 6205 (up to 499 posts) and 6205a (up to 999 posts). The percentages are based on user counts, not posts.

non-newbie-users-by-title.png

Posts by User Title - shows that the post distribution by user title is much more balanced than the membership counts. For example, there are about 2.2 times as many Regulars as 6502s, but they've made about the same number of posts (14% of total posts vs. 13% of total posts). Users with title 604 and above may be only 0.7% of our forum members, but they've made 7.9% of the total posts.

posts-by-user-title.png

Posts by Top 50 Status - shows that although the top 50 posters have made a huge number of posts, it's only 6% of total forum posts.

Nerd heaven, @Doctor Q, nerd heaven. Fascinating and thank you very much for going to the time and trouble to put all of this together.

Wow, I've been on the forums a lot less these past 6 months and yet I'm still posting up a storm. That surprises quite a bit.

Great work Q, as always.

Interesting reading. The fact that you used pie charts didn't go unnoticed!

Fascinating.

But 'never' sounds like such a long time. Almost an eternity, in fact….

A lovely read Q and thank you for making it. I may have to start posting more to throw off the 6 month prediction, yet again.
