Rank = Position in order by post count, 1 (highest) to 50.
Current Top 50 = members with the 50 currently highest post counts.
Cur Posts = # of posts by that member.
Cur Rate = average # posts per day by that member over the last 6 months.
Prev Rank = previous rank, as of 6 months ago (July 2015), or "---" for those who are new to the Top 50.
Delta Rank = change in rank, i.e., # of slots +higher or -lower in rank since 6 months ago.

Observations
  1. C DM and MRU have moved into the Top 20.

  2. Weaselboy's post rate is 64% higher than SandboxGeneral's, and more than double his overall average since joining, but he didn't yet pass SandboxGeneral to reach the Top 20.

  3. ucfgrad93 and samcraig are new to the Top 50.

  4. jav6454 (active) and r.j.s (inactive) have dropped off the Top 50.

  5. Nobody is in 50th place since inactive users KnightWRX and Surely tied for 49th place with 15,043 posts each.

Thanks Q. Interesting reading as always. Only another 5000 posts and I'll sneak in there!
Sad to see how many active members on the list who used to post so regular have moved on.
Oh well that's life I guess.
Look forward to the rest of your stats.

Great insights!

Small requests, some insights to who posts the most text (words-in-a-post, average and absolute text) and maybe a "Word cloud" to what the top fifty talk about?

This way we could know who contributes the most (in text) and what they generally contribute (talk about).

Thanks.

Only when I clicked 'reply' did the actual list of the 'top 50' show up. On the page, as a post, it cut after no 16 and did not display the full 50. Not sure whether that is what others see, or whether it is simply my computer's screen.

Anyway, thanks, @Doctor Q - for taking the time and the trouble to put all of this together. Oddly enough, I find stats such as this fascinating reading.

Move your cursor over the chart and then scroll; its dynamic and separate from the scrolling of the page.

I see it as a scrolling window that allows you to scroll down and see the remaining users on the list

Bravo, thanks to both of you, @MacDawg, and @SandboxGeneral. Much appreciated - that worked - and no, it never occurred to me that it might be a scrolling entry.

Anyway, thank you both for your replies: I can see the full page now.

  6. The inactive bot named MacBytes is not included, but would rank #43 right now and would be projected at #46 in 6 months.

  7. In a Top 100, arn would rank #60 right now and would be projected at #63 in 6 months.

Very nice job with the number-crunching @Doctor Q; as always, extremely interesting to read.

Columns:
  1. Proj Rank = Projected position in order by post count, 1 (highest) to 50.
  2. Projection End of Time = members with the 50 highest projected post counts as time goes to infinity, based on a computed post rate.
  3. Weighted Rate = # posts per day by that member as a cascading weighted average, giving 50% weight to the most recent 6 months, 25% to the previous 6 months, 12.5% to the previous 6 months, and so on, with adjustments made based on the length of membership.
  4. Cur Rank = current rank as of January 2016 (Chart 1), or "---" for those who are not in the current Top 50.
  5. Delta Rank = projected change in rank, i.e., # of slots +higher or -lower in rank from now until the end of time.
  6. Last EOT = rank in End of Time projections from 6 months ago (July 2015, Chart #3), or "---" for those who were not in the previous End of Time Top 50.
  7. Delta EOT = change in rank from End of Time projection 6 months ago to End of Time projection now.
These are the true "top posters" at MacRumors since they currently make the most posts over any given time period.

Observations
  1. Only 9 of 50 members in the Top 50 End of Time are among the current Top 50 posters, showing the major difference between post count and post rate.

  2. maflynn and C DM are clear leaders over all other forum members, with maflynn having a slight edge, but a fluctuation in either post rate could easily switch the lead. On average, they each make one post per hour, around the clock.

  3. Compared with the End of Time projections from 6 months ago, the users in slots 3 through 7 have stayed bascially the same, but with a change in order, as Newtons Apple edged out Rogifan and Weaselboy, and Scepticalscribe passed all three. SandboxGeneral, formerly number 6, has maintained the 9 posts/day rate required to be in the Top 10 End of Time.

  4. eyoungren, Apple fanboy, and MRU move in lockstep. Formerly #12, #13, and #14, they are now #7, #8 and #9, pushing JayLenochiniMac out of the Top 10.

  5. Of users in the End of Time list from 6 months ago, Max(IT) has moved up the most (28 slots). Previously near the very bottom of the list, he's now in the Top 20.

  6. Gav2k moved up 22 slots, just missing the Top 25.

  7. The largest drop (22 slots) was AppleScruff1, making only 326 posts in the last 6 months (weighted post rate 3.44), compared with 901 in the previous 6 months (weighted post rate 5.12). Intell and samcraig each dropped 20 slots.

  8. If you don't have at least 3 comments to make each day, you won't make the list. The minimum post rate required for the End of Time Top 50 has increased from 2.78 posts/day to 3.13 posts/day.

  9. Only one member with a weighted post rate over 3 posts/day missed the End of Time Top 50. That was shandyman, with a rate of 3.06 posts/day.

  10. The longest memberships among the End of Time Top 50 belong to users who joined in 2005: Weaselboy (January), MRU (August), and OllyW (October).

  11. Newtons Apple continues to be the Top 50 End of Time member with the shortest forum membership: 21.8 months.

  12. If we expanded the list to the Top 100 End of Time, arn would be #90. I'd be #56.

Given the very large number of top 50 posters with 0 mean posts per day, I wonder if you'd consider tracking the top 50 posters who also have a mean posts per day greater than 0. Well, more like greater than 0.01 (or some small threshold), since anyone who has posted at least once will have a nonzero mean.

There are a number of names in the Top 50 whom I have never seen online; but it is equally clear that - at some stage - a number of them were extraordinarily prolific posters in the early days. For a variety of reasons, many of them have left or are no longer actively involved in the community.

However, I am a lot more familiar with the names on the second and third lists - most of whom I recognise.

Small requests, some insights to who posts the most text (words-in-a-post, average and absolute text) and maybe a "Word cloud" to what the top fifty talk about?
I don't have a way to measure post size or capture text statistics, but I can say what I've observed informally: that the top posters aren't merely firing off trivial posts all day. They spend more total time at the site and post a mixture of short comments and longer comments that they've put quite a bit of thought into. I'm a good example. I'm quick with a joke, but I sometimes spend hours composing an important post. Not to mention threads like this, where I spend a couple of days preparing a few posts.

When the user named mad jew was the top poster, he was almost always helping other users by giving technical advice in his posts. I don't know how he did it, but we sure appreciated it. What we appreciate now is how engaged our top posters are with our corner of the online community, and how willing they are to discuss just about anything with anybody.

Good idea. I'll collect what I need to post that list.

I'm the reverse, there are a lot of new names I have never heard of. But those "old timers" are people I chatted with regularly. I guess that's what happens when you have been here 14 years.

I do sorely miss mad jew. He had some of the best posts I've ever seen, and so many of them. Actually, there's a number of posters on that list I miss that have come and gone, some of them within my own length of membership.

It's nearly unbelievable to me that this September will be my 10th year at MR; there's been a lot of change, a lot of turmoil as well as a lot of great memories and events in that decade. This top 50 list will always be one of my favorites. Just like MacNut (14 years on here! Crazy stuff :D) said, there's a good number of names on the list, and especially the end of time list, that I don't know at all. I guess this community is too big now to really know all the posters, even if they are prolific ones. I wonder how many members there are now compared to when I joined in 2006? Anyway, I'm also not as big a part here as I once was. If I had kept up my posting in recent years to the levels of my first couple years, I would probably myself be somewhere on that list.

But I guess only the members of true posting prestige make the cut. ;) Still glad be here. Best wishes to all those on the list and of mention, and thanks @Doctor Q to for putting this together once again; your tireless (tired?) efforts are not in vain. :p

If we count forum registrations, there were 82,813 when you joined in September 2006, and now there are 1,011,525. So about 92% of current members joined after you did, and 99% joined after I did (September 2002).

Re prolific posters, it is entirely possible that you won't spot them if you don't hang out where they do.

On principle - a principle I may have to temporarily suspend as I am contemplating purchasing an iPhone sometime later this year - I stay well away from the iPhone sub-fora, and the iWatch stuff, not to mention Apple TV.

That means that I am not remotely familiar with anything that goes on in those exceedingly busy sections of the forum.

On a separate matter, @Doctor Q - - and fantastic work producing these endlessly fascinating statistics - a matter I know I have raised this before. What are the percentage breakdowns of members and number of posts? I seem to recall reading ages ago that around 90% of the membership make a angle post, or post fewer than ten posts.

Anyway, I'd be curious to see what the breakdowns are in the various membership categories; I'd imagine that it is like one of those demographic models shaped a bit like a triangle.

@Doctor Q

Excellent job as always with putting these charts together! Always fun to read through.
Yeah, evidently I don't have a life, but strangely I do. Most of my activities are in the morning, and as the day wears on my interaction decreases to the point where I'm rarely online at night.

Agreed. And yes, that is quite a lot of posts. An astonishing amount of posts, to be honest.

Yeah, evidently I don't have a life, but strangely I do. Most of my activities are in the morning, and as the day wears on my interaction decreases to the point where I'm rarely online at night.

I find that it - participation - ebbs and flows, and life commitments can either curtail, inhibit or enhance one's rate of participation. There was a time when I almost entirely dropped out of MR for several months - as a result of one particular posting where I worked abroad for over two years. Other positions have left me with more time. These days, I am active and participate more than I ever thought would have been the case.

Top spot couldn't go to a nicer chap!
Is there a prize?
I bet we could russle you up a nice MR hat or t-shirt!

Perhaps, a polo shirt, nice and black.
