iCloud sync is only available in the App Store version already since 1Password 5.
Sometimes reading the description before posting erroneous info is a very good thing. Oh well. But not surprised by anything on this forum. Certainly correct information from the posters is NOT something to be expected.

How is this compared to LastPass ? LastPass seems to be a lot cheaper at 12$ a year....At 50 bucks a pop for 1Password, I could get 4 years of LastPass instead (and this means all the upgrades LastPass would get in those 4 years)

1Password is way better. It costs more but so do Macs vs PC's we all know why, quality.

I only have two bullet points that have been on the 1Password roadmap for almost 2 years now and really should get integrated.

- Option to rename vaults especially the default ( primary ) vault.
- Option to sync multiple vaults with iCloud

That's it then..

You can just wait for discounts (use appshopper notification).
Remember that 1Password is one time purchase and you don't need to have a year subscription.
I'm using 1Password for more than a year and I can tell you for sure that is the best app I have bought.

What are the benefits of 1Password over iCloud Keychain? I used the 1Password trial last week but found it really annoying to use compared to iCloud Keychain... Maybe I did something wrong...
There was time when Apple key chain did not sync. But in addition to that:
It does not lock you into the Apple ecosystem
It uses passphrase as oposed to a password, so is potentialy more secure (although that is less of a thing with two factor authentication).
For me its less anoying, since you can set the timeout before you have to re-enter your password.

I would love to be able to only use iCloud Keychain, but there are a several reasons why I have 1Password.

  • There are websites that won't allow iCould Keychain to populate their fields. 1Password gets around this.
  • If a website is set up with a two page login you can configure 1Password to work with it, whereby iCloud Keychain generally won't.
  • If I am using an app on my iPhone, and all else fails it's really easy to get to 1Password to copy and paste my passwords.
  • With iCloud Keychain the suggestion is what it is, and you cannot edit it. With 1Password I can edit the suggested password before sending it to the web form. This is very helpful if the website in question insists on you using a special character.
  • 1Password allows you to use the same vaults on Windows as OS X and iOS, as long as you use Dropbox to synch. I don't use this functionality, because I don't want my passwords stored in Dropbox. But if you're stuck on Windows at work you can use it to still get to your password vault.

One huge annoyance with iCloud Keychain is the inability to simply update a saved password (or login), à la recent versions of Firefox.

Edit: for use for only saving and entering passwords

Once you learn 1Password you will never go back to the plain simple iCloud Keychain. I have been using 1Password since version 2 (around 8 years ago) and every update is a huge improvement.

Sync to iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch/Watch/Mac/Windows. The best App!!!

You get what you pay for. 1Password is a much advanced application.

If you're really paranoid - and when it's about your most intimate passwords, you should be - then you wouldn't use any cloud based service for syncing. In fact it is worth mentioning that 1password also supports "file based syncing". Off course that's only useful if you have a network share that you control (like a NAS, for instance). Like this is sync all my Macs.

Syncing to mobile devices takes an extra - manual - step via "Wi-Fi Sync", but that's okay, as you usually don't add passwords each day (I sync with my mobile devices maybe once a months or so).

Lack of cross-platform ability is the biggest. I also use KeyChain on my Apple devices (MacBook's, iPad, iPhone, Apple TV), etc....however try and make KeyChain work on another environment.

1password excels at this.

'Seems to be.'

You would need to be a bit more precise about '$50 a pop' to make a fair comparison. It looks like I'm going to get four years of updates out of one $50 purchase, and for that amount my family each get their own copies too.

Well Last Pass was Hacked in 2012 and many people jumped! Anything with a central database is a target go become a baking target so many Mac users jumped to 1Password!

I haven't noticed that, although I don't use Firefox. In Safari I am able to update passwords in iCloud Keychain (and 1Password) quite easily. If I change a password they both ask me if I want to update it.

What are the benefits of 1Password over iCloud Keychain?

Windows version
Android version
...or you can just open the database in a browser to get basic functionality
Use with any cloud service (e.g. DropBox)
...or don't use no stinkin' cloud and sync via a USB stick or local WiFi.

1Password is one of my favorite apps for the Mac, and one of the few third-party apps that I use. I'm occasionally tempted to go native with Keychain, but when tried it again a few weeks ago I just found it way less managable than 1Password. Although Keychain does the nuts and bolts, which is generating and saving passwords, anything beyond that feels like a PITA (or impossible) compared to 1Password. Oh well, I might try it again in a month or so.

And because I purchased 1Password from the company's store, I'm extremely happy it now supports iCloud sync.

I really want to like and use this app full-time. But:

€49,99 for the OS X version
€9,99 for the iOS version
€11,16 for the Android version

Means I would have to pay a whopping €71,14 to get my MacBook Pro, iPhone 6s and NVIDIA Shield K1 tablet connected. That's just too much. :(

Isn't the 50$ price for a single license? If it can be shared amongst family members, then it might be worth it.
And to your point of you getting 4 year updates, I highly doubt that. This update to v6 was free but I think this is an anomaly? Usually, you pay an upgrade fee.

Thanks for this! Did not know about this at all. But from what I understand, users' passwords were not compromised. And plus, if you had enabled 2FA, you are doubly secure. LastPass came out relatively unscathed.

!Password with a cloud syncing option would also be protected similarly I suppose. Even if the keychain is compromised (say iCloud is hacked again), it would be very difficult to gather the passwords cause of encryption and the fact that the master key is not stored in the cloud.

Someone pointed here, use AppShopper to track a price drop on this. It was 32$ during the holidays.
Not sure about the mobile apps though. The whole setup, like you say, is quite expensive.

You could explore LastPass subscription at 12$/year. A lot cheaper and it gives you access to syncing across all your devices.
You could also explore Dashlane which is free if you are using it on any one device but asks for an expensive subscription if you want to sync. I am using this right now, only on my Mac. So it is free. It is better than the iCloud keychain cause it is easier to manage passwords, notes, license keys etc.

I am evaluating if I need passwords to sync across mobile devices as well and if I do, it will most likely be LastPass or the iCloud keychain (since I am currently using an iPhone and a Mac)

Through the Mac App Store, Family Sharing is enabled so yes, one license works for everyone in the household.

I bought 1Password about 2 years ago (v4) I don't recall paying For the v5 update, and this v6 update is free too, so I'm going to get at least three years. Four years might be a stretch but these free updates are not so much an anomaly as a sympton of developers struggling with Apple's policies on upgrade pricing. I don't particular like taking advantage, but thats the way it is and I dont see Apple relenting any time soon.

Nobody "hacked" iCloud. Those people used easy to guess passwords or the same password for every place they visit. Nor did they use two-factor authentication.
