I try to reevaluate my password management subscription anually but I missed my 1PW renewal window, i.e., it already renewed. My concern is that the 1PW continues price increases and at some point I don't feel like its worth the cost.
Yeah I decided if I had to have a sub anyway, Bitwarden is the most cost-effective. Haven't regretted it yet.

Moving my whole family to a new product would be hard and risky. I'm really not in a position to test the waters with a different product. I can already hear my family complaining.

Yeah looks like it is gone from website. No lifetime license option anymore from their own website. Hopefully it stays at App Store etc option that still get it around that way.

i think they shot themselves in the foot. A license was part of the attraction to their product. I mean I agree a lifetime upgrades is dirt cheap at $60 but they could have opted for a higher priced lifetime like $200 , or 3-5 years free updates at $60 then you are on your own.

they area already obscure compared to 1PW/free Bitwarden and they are thinning the margin on why to pick them over 1PW.

local storage remains their selling point

Here's the differences, you actually get a full featured password manager on the free tier. There is some nice features with the paid tier though.

As for the sub being there for survival, they've said all along their "survival" is based on business subscriptions not personal subs - I can find their quote/statement saying that but I did come across that. As for the cost of the sub, its a no brainer if you're using it, 10 dollars a year is the cost of a single cup of coffee, less then a pizza.

Here'sΩ

Bitwarden subscription is one of the greatest price deals in history, the features are totally not necessary and the price is ridiculously attractive.

actually its worth the cost, its not worth the cost in comparison 😛

id probably pay double for 1PW if it was the only option, but with their competitors giving free tiers like Bitwarden, Apple Passwords, Proton Pass it makes 1PW more unnecessary subscription

managing Bitwarden accounts is not friendly, the interface and lingo style is very corporate SAAS like.

I see there's a 7-day families trial. Maybe I'll try it out when I have a block of time to spend on it. Actually, if I wanted a longer trial I could subscribe. Their website says I can unsubscribe at any time. Does anyone know if that means they'll refund the prorated amount for the unused paid-for term?

Maybe I'll answer myself with

According to that page, you don't get any amount refunded unless you cancel within 30 days.

I think the cancel anytime means no lock in long term contracts, if you choose the monthly option. I accidently clicked on ms 365 subscription and 3 months later i wanted to cancel only to be surprised i got the annual plan but the deduction is monthly (dark pattern). I think no service will return the money of the current month.

If you want to test Bitwarden go ahead, but unless you want FREE or support FOSS , 1PW is better in every aspect except the autofill (last i checked) Bitwarden almost makes no mistakes and if it does you can configure it to fill any field on any page. Its very easy to tell Bitwarden was built from the ground up to be a SAAS/corporate password manager meanwhile 1PW is more of a consumer app.

I happily pay the sub for Bitwarden and I have never regretted switching from 1PW years ago.

I find Bitwarden lackluster when it comes to password management , organizing them in folders, quick edits, etc etc. One of the most annoying things is any custom field can only go way down under the NOTES field and there is no way to re-organize any fields , at least not the password ones.

Where custom fields are located annoys me also. I make use of them a lot.

Wow doubling the price, makes it harder to justify since 1PW is 35 dollars a year. Now I get even in America 20 is less then 35, but, 1PW has features and is a more polished product.

Speaking of which, 1PW has introduced more protections for its customers
As AI supercharges phishing scams, 1Password introduces built-in protection

Here’s how it currently works: when a 1Password user clicks a link where the URL doesn’t match their saved login, 1Password won’t autofill their credentials. That’s an important first step. However, in those situations, users may not understand why their credentials aren’t being autofilled and try to manually copy and paste them to the fake website.

Our new phishing feature adds an extra layer of protection. When a user attempts to paste their credentials, the 1Password browser extension displays a pop-up warning, prompting them to pause and exercise caution before proceeding.

If 1Password would just let me store and sync everything locally I'd perhaps relent and go subscription (as much as I continue to dislike that model....I am slowly accepting I just have to accept it if I wish to actually, you know, have such services).

you may want to consider Enpass that went subscription only as it seems but mainly offers local storage. Although the team behind the app seems to be the most unenthusiastic app developer, they do not even reply to forum posts.

Another option is codebook which seems to be free if you store you data locally and not use their cloud service to sync.

what are you using now?

tbf, bitwarden is free and all the paid features are unnecessary. Heck i am subscribed just to support them. 1PW is paid only.

Reconsidering my stance, although I am still against subscription models for the most part, $20 or $35 per year is a drop in the bucket given how essential a password manager is.

The new features to you may be unnecessary but, you can't categorically state such for all, which you did.

Generally speaking, I prefer to do the one time payment method. However, I also realize that there is cost involved with development and maintenance of features. As such, it comes down to what is important and needful for the individual buyer.

There is still the option to selfhost Bitwarden and to pay nothing. If you have an old Macbook or a Mac Mini or some 300$ mini PC with Linux and Docker on it you're free to go.

You're right. On the other hand the paid tier doesn't offer anything that is needed for a password manager to properly function. They stated themselves that they offer the free tier to get business customers. It is their way to make new customers. So they offer a fully functional password manager for free.
Bitwarden doesn’t publish a detailed revenue breakdown, but public statements and press coverage strongly suggest that most of their revenue comes from Business/Enterprise customers. They report about 50,000 business organizations, and enterprise plans are much higher priced than personal Premium, so business is widely considered their main revenue driver.

All that is true. Like I said previously, it all comes down to what is important to the individual. Sometimes, free isn't the best option.

You're right, I forgot, but its still a bitter pill to swallow for Bitwarden's customers.
1Password went up in price as well to $47.88 New customers get the $2.99 / month rate for the first year.
Oh that's right, and we current customers should brace ourselves for a price increase.

Yeah $20 is way less than $48 so I guess I am sticking with Bitwarden.

1Password just kind of sucked when I used it. It had more features, but I didn't use any of those and the simple stuff just seemed overly complicated compared to Bitwarden. Bitwarden also has that password phishing thing protection as well. It has a popup that says, are you sure you want to use your password for site "x" with site "y"?

So I am good.

Enpass (on lifetime license) is what I have been using for, oh, 3 years, I think. What you say about (lack of) development is why I am even looking around elsewhere. No move is imminent; I'd just like to have choices.

Take a look at Strongbox. I have been using it for the last 5 years and have been happy with it. I went the lifetime payment. I believe it was $48 early on.

Just "upgraded" from version 7 using icloud to version 8. I hate it.
1. Quick search now requires two clicks instead of one,
2. Searching for office showed me 22 hits previously, now only 10
3. Icons are now just general icons, previously it was a dedicated icon
4. Everything is 2 times as large, can be manually adjusted down, but why?

10 times the price and not good.

I backed out of it, anyone knows for how long we can use 1password7?
I noticed that on a fresh install of an iPhone and download and launch of 1password I could not go on to use iCloud. I had only two choices, login or create account.

Yeah I also was unimpressed with the latest version of 1Password when trying it out. Stuck with Bitwarden.
