It's a wonder what's taking developers so long to update for higher resolutions, as it stands, most apps look terrible when blownup.

Apple certainly didn’t make it easy to test apps for the resolution of the 6 Plus - for example the emulator doesn’t actually emulate 1920x1080… and with scaling down the graphics are a bitch to get right.

I was adverse to many of these password apps, but finally gave iCloud Keychain a try after another major site got hacked, changed all my passwords to unique randomness, and it's been great. iCloud Keychain is great in many ways, but as time went on I found it lacking. Once 1Password got the Safari extension for iOS, I gave it a try and I've been nothing short of thrilled with it. It's about as close to as perfect of a solution as you can get. I still use it in combination with iCloud Keychain as for certain things, iCloud Keychain is quicker, but there's plenty that iCloud Keychain doesn't do so well that 1Password just knocks out of the park. It's worth every penny. I just wish I had bought the Mac version as now it's more than it was over the summer, and now I know I really want it!

Lastpass is much better. https://lastpass.com

I prefer 1Password for 4 main reasons:
  1. Nothing is stored on 1Password's server. You can choose between local only, Dropbox, or iCloud. It's worth noting that 1Password and LastPass use more or less same type of encryptions, but I like both the portability and additional layer of security that Dropbox or iCloud provides.
  2. It's possible that 1Password, too, may eventually move toward subscription pricing. But as it stands, 1Password does not (vs. $12/year for LastPass).
  3. While UI and UX are subjective, I frankly think 1Password looks much better. And since I use password management constantly, I like the extra level of polish that 1Password has.
  4. Many apps support 1Password for logging in. No more copy and paste.

If you like storing all your passwords in their cloud... then yes... good luck to you with that.

I too prefer Lastpass, because of the price and because I like their chrome/safari extension UI better.

MacRumors.com has a boner for 1Password for some reason. This one app seems to get more articles than any other. Are they a sponsor or something?
Because it's both the better, and the less expensive(no ongoing fees) of the options.

Local user control of encrypted archive. They don't store your encrypted archive.

In the MAS under purchases, (Yosemite) it says there is an update for 1Password 4.4.2 but there is nothing showing in the update section. Clicked on the app and then clicked update but nothing appears to be happening.

Yosemite support is forthcoming with 1Password 5 for Mac, which will be a free upgrade for 1Password 4 for Mac. It is tentatively scheduled to coincide with Yosemite release.

Sure, but this speaks pretty low of their work product. Writers are certainly allowed to speak highly of the products they use and enjoy. They can even write arguably pointless stories discussing a .1 app revision which does little more than adjust resolution and squash bugs. However, when they do this to the same app over and over again, ignoring many other good and worthwhile apps and developers (including many outside the password management realm), it seems either like backroom favoritism or laziness.

1Password is an excellent example of new functionality offered in iOS 8. Since using fingerprints to access third party apps is new, when an app implements it and then updates it, it is news.

Perhaps 1Password shows up a lot because they have a product that uses cutting edge features right away, not because it is someone's pet app.

1Password 4.4.2 is working fine for me on Yosemite.

Of course, LastPass stores on its servers nothing but a bunch of encrypted gobbledygook. Without the master password, nothing short of a massive computer form would ever make sense of that data, so really the LastPass stuff is quite secure.

How secure? LastPass can't break into it and they are storing it.

I'm not saying WiFi syncing isn't a feature, but it sure seems like one most people would never think twice about considering important.

That's what they claim... but it's proprietary code. Only they know that. They developed it, they can crack it.

With 1Password, it's encrypted using their algorithm. And if you choose to sync via iCloud or DropBox, it's synced via a service they have no control over.

Why don't you submit some stories about apps that enhance your Apple experience?

I have used 1Password for years and love it.

Edit:

Question about app extensions. I want to log into the Google app. How does 1Password get involved here?

While many of us do use 1Password and can thus vouch for its usefulness and security, the app updates that we choose to share are often based on user response (basically, the type of stuff you guys like to read).

We keep a careful eye on what tends to be popular with our readers. The app updates that you see on the iOS blog often cover apps that are widely used and that incorporate innovative features, garnering them a lot of attention from their user base.

We experiment with other apps at times, but if you look back at some of the past coverage, you'll see that a lot of times apps don't generate much interest. This impacts whether we cover an app in the future and it also impacts the type of apps that we choose to cover, because we don't want to post things that people find largely uninteresting.

If you have suggestions for apps that we should share, I highly recommend emailing us at tips@macrumors.com. We read all of the emails that we receive and consider all suggestions that readers provide.

Edited to add: 30 minutes later and it finally shows in the update section or download. MAS must have been slow getting it over.

Yea, it generally seems to take a lot more time for updates to propagate. When we flip the switch on releasing the update it usually takes a couple of hours for it to reach all corners of the world. Glad it's working for you now :)

Apps that are updated for the 6 and 6 Plus look brilliant.

I find it funny, AgileBits have rolled out two great updates (versions 5.0 and 5.1) while Facebook haven't even updated their app yet. Pathetic really.

Will a (free) update for the Macintosh version of 1Password be made available for Yosemite?

1Password 4.4.2 is working fine for me on Yosemite.
While 1Password 4 works fine, it could use some few minor UI polishes (e.g., support for dark mode, more flat look to blend in with native Yosemite apps).

And Agilebits teased us with this little bit on the latest newsletter:
Last but certainly not least, we have been working feverishly on 1Password 5 for OS X Yosemite.

1Password 5 will require OS X Yosemite and will be a free update for all 1Password 4 for Mac customers.

I wish I could share all the exciting details now, but it will have to wait until Yosemite ships. As busy as things will be, I promise you will not have to wait another five months to hear from me :)

Until next time, take care and please let me know if there is anything we can do to help.

I'm not saying anything about LastPass from a security standpoint, I simply don't know enough about it to even talk about it in an educated way. Therefore, best for me to stay away and let others talk of that.

I can say though that one of the things we frequently hear is that users do not want to store their data in a cloud service and that's where our Wifi sync comes into play. That's more what I was trying to say I guess.

Apple certainly didn’t make it easy to test apps for the resolution of the 6 Plus - for example the emulator doesn’t actually emulate 1920x1080… and with scaling down the graphics are a bitch to get right.

This is true, we had issues that showed up only on actual devices and not in the simulator.

Awesome to hear you're enjoying 1Password :) If you ever have any questions please let me know so I can get you the answers you need.

It's not encrypted using our algorithm, we definitely don't suggest designing your own encryption algorithms :)

Buzzword answer:

1Password 4’s Cloud Keychain format uses Encrypt-then-MAC for authenticated encryption with AES-CBC-256 for encryption and HMAC-SHA256 for Message Authentication. Key derivation uses PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA512. On Mac and iOS 1Password uses SecRandomCopyBytes() from Apple’s security framework.

If you want to learn more about why you shouldn't design your own encryption algorithms you can read here: http://blog.agilebits.com/2012/11/08/dont-trust-a-password-management-system-you-design-yourself/

I think the big feature of 1Password 5 will be the use of iCloud Drive. Right now, if you want to keep your Mac in sync with your iOS devices, you have to use Dropbox or not have upgraded to iCloud Drive yet.

Yup, it'll be a free update for existing users. :)

We've had our fair share of bad timing related updates. We're just glad to be on top of things this time around :)

Version 5 for iOS uses CloudKit, which is unique to iOS 8 and Yosemite. We won't be syncing with iCloud Drive (formerly iCloud Document syncing, which we used in version 4).

Subtle difference in words, but a pretty drastic change under the hood. More details here:

Touch ID is not working for me at all, anyone else having this issue? I made sure it was enabled in settings > security... I tried flipping it off and back on, closed the app... But still only have the option to type my password when launching or when locking.

1Password looks interesting, but I'll wait for the next sale. I can afford Mac/Windows/iOS right now, it can get pretty expensive. :\

LastPass is a PITA. I prefer 1Password.

I love the update. It looks so much better with 1080p resolution on my Plus. It's a wonder what's taking developers so long to update for higher resolutions, as it stands, most apps look terrible when blownup.

You do? I hate the impossible to read small text in the new version. Why is nayone thinking 2mm text is readable?

Really happy with this update and 1Password in general. I use it on all my Macs and iOS devices and for me it's absolutely the most valuable 3rd party app, period. I can't imagine working without 1Password and the continued improvements are very appreciated!

Text looks fine to me. I like being able to see more, hence why I have a bigger screen in the first place.

I don't really get how to use it. If I'm gonna use their passwords am I going to have to reset the password on everyone of my logins in every website? And then to use the sites not on my phone I have to buy the £30 app on my Mac?
