Er, I've closed the lid on my PowerBook as it was rendering in FCE. When I opened the lid again 4 hours later, it started right back up with no issues.
Same while ripping a DVD with MacTheRipper. Close the lid, opened it up (this time only 20 minutes later) and it started right back up.
And again, the same while encoding with ffmpegX. Encoding to H.264 with 3 other queued files. Went to sleep, woke up later, no issues.

Each time Safari reconnected to the network and had no issues with me opening new pages. The FCE example was even going between two different locations (proxy servers and whatnot). No issues.

So, it isn't a given. You can and should be able to use the sleep mode whenever you feel like it, not when the computer says, "Sorry bud but I need to do something."
Yeah, yeah, my lappy can also resume calculations (for example a rendering) after coming out of sleep. I was just saying that it wouldn't be all that shocking if some apps objected when being interrupted in the middle of something.

And what is this about "Safari reconnected to the network and had no issues with me opening new pages"? Of course it had no issues. You make it sound like something special that the computer automatically reconnects to any known wireless networks...

You guys are so great at making every feature look Mac exclusive.

Don't get me wrong, I'm looking at buying a Mac in the next year and I think they're great computers. One thing that makes me frown is the the sometimes fanatic fan base, though.

Then ignore the fanatics. I do. I also own a Toyota Prius, which has an equally fanatical group of followers (like the ones who flip of Hummer drivers.) You just ignore the fringe elements, and concentrate on the mainstream.

Same thing as politics. Ignore the extreme left and the extreme right, and all is good. Don't take Michael Moore *OR* Rush Limbaugh seriously. (Yes, they may each be right about something once in a while; same with Mac fanatics, but don't hang on every word.)

i've been thinking about how a hybrid approach to storage (NAND and magnetic) put together solely to improve battery life might eventually find its way into the iPod.

I have no doubt that a NAND drive will show up in Apple laptops and desktops eventually, and that this will drive Samsung and its peers to double NAND capacities every 6-8 months. magnetic drives are topping 500GB now, so they'll be in computers for a long time yet, but once NAND drives break past 10GB, they'll be very usable second drives for all computers (and iPods). If select applications (and their libraries of data) and the OS could be housed completely on the NAND drive (such as iPhoto or Aperture), we'd see serious performance boosts. Imagine a PowerBook with a 250GB magnetic drive, a 20GB NAND drive, and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. With proper OS optimization, that system would scream!!!

Frankly, I haven't seen a Windows-based notebook that was able to enter sleep and leave sleep with no issues, no matter what. I can't speak for Linux, as I have not encountered a Linux laptop, so I do not know about sleep under Linux.

So, based on my experiences, I have to say that Macs only have this feature. It is good to know that you don't have any problems with your Windows encounters. Hopefully, they'll stay that way.
