    Hi all,
My generation 1 8gb does not ring when an incoming call is taking place, or announce an incoming text message.
Have checked the settings, and all the ringtones play when selected from the library, Silent mode is switched off, vibrate works ok when toggled on or off, tried resetting, using home and power buttons together, turning airplane mode on, wait 15 or 30 secs, turn it off again, reset all settings from the menu, but it still won't reproduce the ringtone or alert for calls or texts...........

    Upgraded software, 2.1
    unlocked to all networks
worked fine when first purchased, (a month or so ago)
but now developed this annoying glitch!!!!!!!!
    Any clues???????

Is the ringtone volume set appropriately? Does the speaker work for other functions, e.g. alarm clock or iTunes (without headphones)? Are you willing / able to try firmware 2.2?

    Thanks for your replies.........
    Plumbingandtech,
As to "Restore", I was told that restoring an unlocked phone will return it to it's locked state, and will have to pay to have it unlocked again. And does it mean restoring it through itunes?

    Mkrishnan,
The volume is set OK for other sounds when i play them from the ringtone menu, and I do not have an itune account as yet, so downloaded music is not available to me.
And as for firmware 2.2, I do not have it, and would it rectify this problem, as it worked perfectly a few days ago.

I have not had an iphone before, and technical fixes and operations utilising a PC, are new to me, so please forgive my ignorance on some of your replies,
    Much appreciated...........

    Nick.......

    And the alarm works fine...............

Hmmm, first of all, unlocking a first generation (EDGE) iPhone is free, and you can do it yourself, anytime you want to, with Pwnage or QuickPwn. (It is also, incidentally, legal, at least in the US).

Second, the iPhone stays unlocked unless a part of the firmware called the "baseband" gets updated. The baseband has not been changed with any of the 2.x releases, so when you update it from 2.1 -> 2.2 or you restore 2.1 on it, it will not become locked.

It will, however, lose support for "jailbreak" applications, i.e. ones you install through an application called "Cydia" or an application called "Installer", one of which, most likely, should be in your list of apps if you have jailbreaked, and neither of which should appear in your applications if you have not.

You said you paid someone to unlock your iPhone for you? Who? Loosely speaking, jailbreaked or unlocked phones (really, more the former than the latter) tend to be a little more glitchy than others, so especially since we don't know who unlocked your phone or how they did it, it's hard to rule this out as a culprit.

That's why people suggested you restore the firmware and/or upgrade to 2.2....

    Thanks for the info......
The phone is a European one, bought off e-bay in the UK, and had to send it to someone to have a new touch-screen fitted, as it was sold as a repairable iphone, and they had to unlock it for me to use it with my network provider, but was unaware that it could be done for free! (S**t!)
I have both Cydia and Installer apps on the phone, along with youtube, stocks, maps, weather, clock, calculator, notes, itunes, app.store, and I have B****y found out why i couldn't hear anything when an incoming call came through............

Silly place for a MUTE button anyway!
    God, i feel stoopid!!!!!!!
