I used the original button. I cut little pieces of electrical tape and placed them over the metallic clicker so the button could hopefully make better contact with it once I installed back the small circuit board. The tape also held the clicker in place but it was still a pain trying to align it. The only issue after installing the circuit board is that I no longer got that 'click' feeling from pushing the button, but it does work.

Dude you rock. The information that you supplied is priceless. thank you... now do I want a click or not.. its for the kids so I most likely wont. I did one of those jobs on a itouch before and cracked the screen. you gotta be real careful. Thanks MOF

How do you jailbreak without the home button?

*SKIP THIS IF YOU DON't WANT TO WASTE TIME*
*Not a fix but a alternate solution*
So this also happened to me, the home button just died :\
this seems to be a consistant problem on the 1st gen, seen way to many forums discussing this.
maybe it is just me but i think apple is behind this :\
on the other hand, this started to happen to me after i connected it to itunes and it said "there is a newer firmware available for your device"

The alternate fix

1.jailbreak your ipod/iphone (blackra1n / Quickpwn / etc...)
2.Open Cydia
3.Search "ProSwitcher" and install *also will install "Backgrounder"*
*may have to respring*
4.Open settings on your home screen
5.If installed correctly you should see "Proswitcher" when you scroll down
6. Select "activation methods"
7.Choose your activation method.(i use "From Screen Bottom" & "Double Tap")
8.to exit settings just use the activation method you just selected :p there you are done :p this is also a real cool because you can switch between apps you have opened in a palmpre style.

Enjoy!

* YOU CAN USE SBSSETTINGS HOWEVER THIS IS A MUCH BETTER ALTERNATIVE*

*i also plan on opending my ipod and try to see what is the problem. i will update if i found a fix for it*
**i also plan on restoring my ipod to see it is software issues, will update if anything*

I googled trying to find out how to jailbreak my Ipod Touch, but every tutorial found says that I need to put my Ipon in DFU mode, and to achieve this I need my home button working!! Can you help me with instructions (or a link) to perform the jailbreak without the needing of the home button functionality?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Called DigiExpress 12/2010

Wanted to have them fix my home button. They no longer fix home buttons, because they told me they no longer can find a place to order the buttons.

My home button (1G touch) stopped working, too, so I sent it to digiexpress. They found that it wasn't connected properly, fixed it and sent it back. Charge was $25 for diagnosis and $6.75 for return postage. The fix was free, since it was simple. They can also replace the button and/or the underlying circuit board if needed, but I didn't need them. Good service, prompt communications, I recommend them. And I have no connection with them other than as a customer.

Found a more permanent fix.

I stumbled across this forum because I've been having trouble with my home button. I have a 2nd gen, but I found a fix that works for the 1st gen as well.

If you don't have a problem opening the sucker up, then you'll do fine. ;)

I found the repair on iLounge forum.

There are links to the dis-assemblies in the post. 1st Gen breakdown is here...and 2nd Gen here.

The problem seems to be with the points of contact. Be careful with the type of spoodgers you use. The plastic ones are well known for breaking. I've used mine quite a few times now, but at some point, I'm sure they will give out.

I had recently replaced my digitizer twice (first: cracked screen, second: replacement screen stopped responding in various locations). Both times, I was sure to buy a digitizer with the home button built in (in order to cut down on the work). My most recent home button wouldn't work unless I pressed really hard. Then, yesterday, it stopped working altogether. I didn't want my $17 to go to waste, so I decided to see if I could fix it. Took me about 6 mins to do it. If you're new to opening up the pod, then it could take you a bit longer. I watched this video several times before I cracked it open for the first time. There are several videos for the 1st gen iPod as well.

Good luck everyone!

How do you get out of your applications?

You have to shut the ipod off and turn it on again if you want to switch apps:apple:

----------

This works tempararoly but you can put rubbing alcohol on the home button. put a dot on the home button and use an eraser to make sure you get the liquid everywhere. After that, dry it off and wait. (your ipod will go crazy and start doing stuff on its own but when that stops it should work temperaroly. It verys on how long it lasts);)
