    I have a 1st gen 17" MBP 2.16 -
Can someone give me an estimate of what percentage of increase performance the new 4th gen (2.4-2.6) MBP have over the 1st gen MBP?
    thanks

To give you an idea of the differences in speed using geekbench a 1.83Ghz macbook pro core duo gets 2210 and a 2.5Ghz core 2 duo macbook pro gets 3171.

You can check it out here. http://www.primatelabs.ca/blog/2008/04/

FWIW, I upgraded from a 2.16 + 7200MBP Gen 1 to a current Penryn 2.6 + 7200 RPM and the difference was very noticeable. Faster, MUCH better screen and seriously cooler.

Was a great upgrade for me.
