1st Generation iPhone Downgrade Problems

I'd really like to get my original iPhone to 1.1.4. I've done it in the past but when I let my wife use it she upgraded it to 3.1.3.

I've downgraded my iTunes to 8.2 and put the phone into DFU mode but instead of iTunes detecting it I get "the iPod software update server could not be contacted".

I've attempted on both Mac and Windows with the same results.

Any suggestions?
