So we had another newbie today post “1st” as the first comment to a News Discussion thread (which was quickly modded to oblivion).

Does anyone know just when and why all this “1st” nonsense started? And why is still apparently a thing today?

Even back in the day when I remember originally seeing them it made no sense and now it makes even less...

Asking for a friend.

I'm pretty sure it started on Slashdot.

Perhaps a case of one having nothing to say but nonetheless would like to bask in the glory of being in before everyone else. Pretty common in some YouTube channels too. If one wants to be fast and glorious, perhaps it would be far better to invest the energy in high-frequency trading instead.

Some might not know that MacRumors was directly based on Slashdot. The original version of MacRumors ran on a PHP port of Slashcode which was open source software that powered Slashdot.

The visual design we've carried over to even today. The whole header/article style was from the original slashdot design.

Haha. As an old slashdotter - that is cool.

Is it time to welcome our robot overlords yet again?

So who's Cowboy Neal here, and who got nominated to be the site's "Insensitive Clod"?

cool info - did not know that

I always thought of MacRumors as an alternative to Macworld forums back then - there must have been a big increase in traffic when Macworld shut down their forums - never really understood why they closed the forums down

I think it would be a cool thread - to create - History of MacRumors ?

I joined MacRumors because I had just purchased an iMac (the first generation aluminum) in 2007 which was my first mac and had some questions. Overall, I find this sight to be very helpful when needed.

It's funny when I see people do this on Instagram. Because more often than not, by the time their comment has actually posted, loads of others are in front of them and they look more stupid than usual. 😂
