Thanks for the pointer, it seems the inxtron products are more easily available in Europe.
Physical location is a big deal, and it also tends to affect pricing, particularly in Europe (higher prices + higher taxes). :(

€ 130 VAT included.

The equivalent G-Raid 2TB solution costs €290 here in the apple store (sales tax included). So you have € 160 left in your pocket to spend on decent hard drives when buying the inXtron unit.

I'd say €130 is a very good price for the inXtron (or Macpower) raid unit.

Sales tax is 19% on average here. So the Inxtron is actually €109 ex. sales tax. This is roughly $145.

It seemed like a decent price, but I hadn't looked at the different brands (just the Sans Digital unit, which goes for ~$180 - 200USD from the sites I checked).

I figured worst case, there's a few sites here that will ship internationally, and the lower price helps with taxes. S/H might be acceptable (total cost still lower than European sources), as it's not a large or heavy item.

Importing such an item is not really worth it. Shipping, import duties and sales tax (which is levied over the grand total) can easily add up to €100 for a unit like this.

Furthermore, most US online stores completely ignore european buyers. On Ebay as well. Recently I tried to purchase an Innovative 7500 monitor arm on Ebay for $95 (which would have cost me around €500 if purchased here) and even when asking nicely the seller couldn't be bothered to accept a foreign bid. I really pisses me off that often US sellers think the world ends at the US border.

It works out with some things, but not others. Perhaps the item's I'm aware of it working out, was due to the cost was really high in Europe (i.e. RAID cards), or in a situation it's the only way to get something that's absolutely necessary (no choice).

It may have to do with the difficulties involved with overseas shipping, and fear of getting burnt (there's plenty of scammers on eBay, unfortunately).

I've not done it with eBay, but have sent gifts before. I didn't think it was too difficult, but it does mean a trip to the carrier to make sure the documents are correct (I don't want to end up getting it stuck in customs for a typo/wrong declaration, so I spend the time to make sure).
