Surely you would also dim the screen at night, so the keys wouldn't be that well illuminated

I rarely sit in the dark with the computer (it puts strain on the eyes which will lead to eye problems), but I tested the other night, when screen was at 50% I could see the letters on the keys. ;)

I sit in the dark a lot, but went ahead and bought the 2.0 at first, because with my 1 year old Toshiba the ink on the keys was reflective, so no issues there.
NOT so much with the MB... I do a lot of typing in the dark and couldn't really see the keys well, so since I had other issues with the laptop I opted for the 2.4 next time around.
LOVE it!!! For me at least, it was worth the extra $$.

One comparison is enough:

Macbook 2.0
320 GB 7200 RPM Hard Disk
4 GB ram

1499

Macbook 2.4
250 GB 5400 RPM Hard Disk
2 GB ram

1599

My 2.0 MacBook is A LOT faster than stock 2.4 and CHEAPER :D

Just 2 cents

Yup.. Why do they even make the 2.4 model?! It's no better than a 2.0 .... We're all getting ripped off!!! OUTRAGEOUS!! :D
"one comparison is enough" ... lol

mavis beacon typing deluxe for osx is 20 bucks.

@op if you want the novelty of backlit keyboard go for it. The 245 dollar you save could be used to upgrade the hdd and ram yourself, and you can keep your old hdd; You would then have 160g hdd, 320gb hdd, 4gb, and enough left over to buy mavis beacon for osx.

but you see the main concern is really not the keys

cuz as i said before i dun look at my keyboard while typing... im a touch typer...

see my post near the end of page 1...

im more concerned regarding the resale value between the two...

Let's be completely pragamatic here about the backlight keyboard.

If you are truly doing real productive work (ie. school work, work related work), then 100% of the time you will have the lights on. This is because you'll have documents or books on your desk that you have to refer to. Reading these documents requires the lights to be on.

The only time that someone should be typing in the dark:
-during a blackout
-hiding from your parents who think you're asleep in your dark room, but you're on your computer looking at porn, playing games, updating your facebook page or chatting with your friends on msn

No one ever does real work in the dark. So for someone to justify that a backlit keyboard (2 leds) is an essential accessory, then you're not really doing real productive work.

I've talked to some colleagues who are MBP users and some of them say that they've never once used the backlit keyboard because they always have a light on. Let's be realistic here. I think the backlit keyboard is more a "cool - wow" factor more than a functional element.
