Are the Dell's specs any different? Or are they basically the same machine in a different enclosure? How much would I save?

I'd get two Dell 24" monitors.

The Dells are cheaper than the ACDs (although not as nice looking enclosure wise), and they have more inputs. You could attach a second machine, TV / VCR feed, or video game console to either monitor to increase your "productivity".

actually craig the dell technically has higher specs than even the 30" ACD.

it is eye-bleedingly bright at first, but once calibrated its very nice indeed!
i got mine for $674 shipped and i love it.

here are specs for some comparison. ( not to mention how useful it is to have a card reader right there on the screen :) )

ACD 30"
Brightness: 400 cd/m2
Contrast ratio: 700:1
Response time: 14ms

Dell 24"
Brightness: 500 cd/m2
Contrast ratio: 1000:1
Response time: 12ms

ACD 23"
Brightness: 270 cd/m2
Contrast ratio: 400:1
Response time: 14ms

Do you like it more than your ACD?

You should make this a poll, even though every response I've read says to go with a 30 inch ACD. Whenever I go to the Apple Store, I druel over those screens. If I was doing video editing and had the money, I think I'd want dual monitors over a single one, but we are talking a 30 INCH display..Go for the 30 inch!

I took FF's suggestion and made this thread into a poll. So everyone vote for what you think the best option is. If you think I should add more options let me know.

this is how i look at it craig.

as far as price per performance goes. yes i think the dell is the winner in my book. for that big of a monitor with that kinda spec, thats real real cheap. plus it doesnt look half bad to be honest.

but the ACD. it is just such a beautiful creation, i cant help but lust after it every time i look at it. and its mine! haha.

its a tough call. but if you are at all interested in saving money without losing performance, then by all means the dell is the pick.

i have no complaints about the 23" ACD performance though, it is fantastic when calibrated. yes the dell has more contrast, but the ACD has its own character.

agh now my head is gonna hurt, i dont know how to choose one! why do i have to own both like this lol.

I say 30". I find with dual moniters that are bigger than 19" Its to much wide space for the amount of height that you get. You'll find that you end up using one way more than the other. Also, the bezes in between the panels bother me. 30" is much better.

edit: If you need to save the cash then go with the 30" Dell. Yeah, its not as good looking but it has multiple inputs and has better specs.

edit 2: I also forgot to mention that new revisions of the ACD are due to have an upgrade (improved look/better specs) soon.
