To confirm it works, and because some people need more than one monitor. If you're only going with one, just go pure DVI, you'll be fine.

I'm a DVI ignorant, but the old ACD has a DVI output while the Mac Pro has DVI Dual Link input. I thought that you can't connect the ACD with DVI to the Dual Link port...

If you are not hard core PC gaming guy, I'd just go boot camp. Remember you don't have to wait for an Apple 5870, you can stick any PC video card in there for the boot camp side. It won't work in OS X, but you'll save money and have a larger variety to choose from.

So I can put a 5970 in a mac pro and be able to use it for boot camp?

Dual-link just means it supports resolutions up to 2560x1600. You can connect the older ACD to a dual-link port, there are no incompatibilities of any kind.

no the 5970 requires two power connections. the Mac pro only has one sadly.
That's not the case. The Mac Pro has two PCIe connectors, as the 5870 requires two. You'll be able to use a 5970 under Windows without issues.

that's great news! i had been told earlier such is not the case.

so if i'm not mistaken the only issue is going to be when you try to boot in OS X, no? can you run both the 5870 and the 5970 at the same time? are there enough power connectors to do so, so that you can run the 5870 in OS X and the 5970 in Win?

There aren't enough connectors on the motherboard to power both at the same time, but you could use an external PSU or something if you really wanted to.

As far as using one GPU under Windows and the other under OS X, I think you'd have to have two monitors (or a monitor with multiple inputs) to do that. I'd rather stick with one GPU in any case.

I'm the OP, just giving my thoughts, but...

ATI 5870 is still one of the best graphic cards currently! Why being greedy with 5970 (if you've already bought one then no comment ;D ). Just stick with 5870 as it's both compatible with windows and osx!

Sign! It's not like about 100 fps in current games with maximum settings is bad. :)

The 5870 definitely has power to spare. I'd go the different mac os/windows gpu route in 2-3 years, when it really makes a difference. First I'll get the gpu upgrade that the next Mac pro update will bring, simply out of convenience.

Amen to that, I'll probably upgrade if the games I want to play lags.

I just hope that it would be compatible though....(I know 2008 mac pro is compatible with 5870, but I never heard 2004,2005 mac pro being compatible with it...) My next game is Diablo 3!

the 5780 is a lot more powerful than many people think. i'm a hardcore PC gamer and have been more than happy with its performance. have a look at my initial thoughts and benchmarks with it here.

the best part about the MacPro for us OS X lovers that play PC games is that you can have the best of both worlds in one box, running on one monitor arrangement, using one keyboard and mouse.

my only recommendation is that you run PC games in Bootcamp. while there are many cross platform titles out there, Win7 is still the best for resource management in current games.
I just bought the mac pro 2.8ghz quad-core 3gb.Its all i can afford right now. Can i upgrade to 8 core later?(another 2.8ghz quad-core)
