I have been smiling inanely at this MP box for almost 35 minutes now. Seriously I really can't stop laughing. Is it because I'm £1300 lighter in the pocket or is it the fact that the trouble and strife and 3 squids will be taking a back seat to this magnificent piece of design genius (well for the next few days anyhow)?

I almost busted the salesman's balls in the store. I chanced my arm by asking him to throw in iLife 09 for free. In the end I paid £39 for it, ah well. At least I've got nothing to pay for the next 12 months and can enjoy my new 'wanderlust' with a guilt free conscience (well until I tell her indoors that I need more ram, another HDD MUUHAHAHAHAHA). This Mac Pro lark is certainly addictive and I havent even opened the box yet. OMG what have I done LOL.

Earlier RAM statement.

I think that I have created a bit of confusion about ram in the MP today. To clarify matters. I was talking about new DDR3 ram for the MP. I dont know who makes Apples memory but a number of people have reported that 3rd party memory has provided some headaches. This is according to sources in the apple store and I was told to be wary as the genius' have been pretty busy with MPs recently and memory issues. Only passing on what I was told!
Anyhoo I'm gonna start another thread on the MBP forum as I'm really pissed off about the ram situation in my late 2008 MBP 2.53ghz. Limited to 4gig when the 2.66 and above supported at 8gig. Ahhhh! Must stop I'm off to enjoy my 'new'(for T) Mac Pro ;))

Where? What? Merzie!

Checked US Apple store there is a refurb 2.8 Mac pro for $2399. So I guess I bagged a bargain in getting an unused brand 'new' one. ;))

He said that it was 2250 in the US.. and I was curious where that price was (store such as ebay, apple, etc.).

Oh! Snouter's mythical $2250 machine! Dunno but man if push comes to shove I'd plump for the refurb from apple as they'll offer extended warranty etc giving you piece of mind! And moreover most machines that are refurbed are impeccable and as good as new. So buy with confidence I did after a little persuasion! Thanks everyone!

Refurbished machines are a nice way to go. ;) They actually get better testing to verify operation. :D

Some members here and there have noticed a slight cosmetic blemish, but doesn't affect function. :)

Slight in Apple's dictionary=almost unnoticeable:D
I'm not sure.

Perhaps those who mentioned anything are overly picky, or Apple's definition has been lowered to save some cash on refinishing/repairing the blemish. :p

Well i suppose in the current economic climate everyone is trying to cut corners even Apple with God knows how many billion! LOL

Have difficulty in sourcing an AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi Card with 802.11n for the 'Silver Brut'. Most stockists on google.co.uk show they have 13 in stock when you go to check realtime stocklist it shows none in stock. Is this coincidental or could I pre-empt a rumour that Apple have recalled all wifi cards for Mac Pro and are going to piggyback wifi during a soon to be announced speedbump;):p hehe!

Damn, they had one listed up until this morning... :(

New (not refurb) and $2250... maybe give them a call?

No sales tax outside of California and only $64 shipping.

----

Apple refurb is next best buy at $2400 refurb + sales tax + free shipping.

An extended warrantee can be purchased for any Mac Pro bought anywhere at anytime up to 1 year after purchase.

I picked up an 08 a month ago, I paid more than you for it but dont regret it one bit. I'm actually thinking of selling my 17" MBP now and getting a MB or MBA to replace it because I hardly use it now.

I bought 8GB of RAM from Crucial to put in it, and now pretty much any app flies :D

I'd be interested in hearing how you get on with the Airport card. Don't buy one from ebay though, I made that mistake and it's complete rubbish and doesn't work... New my ar53...

Enjoy your MP, I know I'm enjoying mine :D

I suffered from nervous exhaustion last night (coupled with exhilaration). Hence I didn't crank open the MP. I called in sick to work today oops! That's coincidental;). To be honest the airport card is giving me a bit of a headache though. I couldn't get one last night from anyone online. I can't plug into Ethernet as router is upstairs. May be trouble ahead (breaks into song at this point). I'm on the hunt for ram as you read this. Advice is to stick 16gig in and your sweet. That's what the plan is. Ahh! Just cracked open the box. Will let you know how it goes. Like stink I hope:))

WD Caviar Black WD1001FALS - Hard drive - 1 TB - internal - SATA-300 - 7200 rpm

Any good for my Mac Pro (Silver Brut)? Was also thinking of 150gb vraptor for boot etc!

I just got 3 of them yesterday. Got them installed, formated, and tested for bad sectors.

All three passed all tests, but one of the drives has me a little concerned. It's performance is spotty. It's producing slightly over 10MB/s slower, and Access Times are 2x those of the other two (over 25 ms). I'll have to keep an eye on this one, as I can't just RMA it. I'd loose the return shipping (newegg), and get hit with a restocking fee, as it did pass the tests.

The other two however, are really nice. :D Even with one being questionable, I've had good luck with WD lately, and consider it an anomaly. :)

UPDATE:
Testing the drive in question again today, is giving better results. So I guess I got lucky. But will continue to watch them, as I need to experiement with the backup software I want to use.

What's the seek time on the Caviars? I now the seek time on the Vraptor is 4.6ms. I need drives to be well less than 10ms for audio for optimum performance. Pro tools is a fussy f**kr especially with more than a few plugins running!

Testing on the Caviar Black is giving 12.4 ms on a consistent basis.

I also have a VR currently used as a boot disk, and it comes in at 7.1 ms. ;) Not 4.6 ms, but still under 10 ms. :p

Form Factor - 3.5" x 1/3H
Interface Type - Serial ATA-300
Data Transfer Rate - 300 MBps
Buffer Size - 16 MB
Spindle Speed - 10000 rpm

Unfortunately, HDD manufacturer's tend to over state matters. :p

I prefer to use other sources for reviews. Tom's Hardware and AnandTech are good ones. Even newegg's customer reviews can be a good source of information a review can't provide, such as some idea of DOA frequency. :)

I'm using the 300GB version (WD3000GLFS), which they also claim to have a 4.2 ms Read Access Time. I also use WD3202ABYS (320GB RE3's), and WD1001FALS (1TB Caviar Blacks). All of them differ from WD's specs, when they exist. Just the way it goes...;) :p

Tru dat.

Those ARE excellent drives tho! The only reason I'm not using them is the size (capacity). I want lots of terabytes! I'm working less and using more these days so I want huge libraries! Just my PDF library alone is 150 GB. (~ 6000 books/mags/whitepapers, ~ 1,800,000 pages total.) and I'm just getting started. :)

BTW, for PDF library management and reading YUP is totally awesome!

More analogies ahem! Yeah buying new computer is like picking a new car (yeah I read the VW vs Cadillac thread :))! You buy one that suits yer purpose, giving good mpg, comfort, reliability and big brand quality. But even after making an informed decision things aren't always as described on the tin. i.e the mpg of a car as stated in testing was 71mpg but in real life situations what you actually get is way short of what you thought you are getting.....42mpg. VR drives 4.2 on the tin, in operation 7.1. Ah well at least it's 3ms less than my threshold for a decent bash at audio and PT.

I don't need massive capacity, so the smaller drives in greater quantities gives the speed neccesary for the lowest overall cost. :D Single platter drives also seem to produce fewer headaches, as there's fewer to fail. :p

BTW, what are you doing? Trying to weed down the hardcopy storage to get some space back?

 Never enough closet or other storage space. Maybe I should stop being a packrat. NAH. :p
